Haarlo offers two distinct focal points for planning a trip: architectural and regional history, and routes through the rural surroundings. De Kluntjespot, a coin hoard from the 13th century and Landgoed Erve Wolink give the village specific cultural and landscape points of interest. Those interested in cultural history can consider the church building and the archaeological find as separate subjects; for outdoor activities, hiking and cycling routes take centre stage.
Architectural history and coin hoard
The De Kluntjespot church was built in 1858 on a symmetrical octagonal floor plan in the Waterstaats style and features both Neo-Gothic and Neoclassical elements. Its form and style can be described separately: the symmetrical octagonal floor plan on the one hand, and the two architectural styles on the other. This gives Haarlo's architectural history a specific architectural focal point.
De Kluntjespot is also used today for exhibitions and concerts. If an event is an important reason for your visit, check the dates before you travel.
In 1980, a coin hoard of 1,100 silver coins from the 13th century was unearthed in Haarlo; the coins had been packed in a stoneware jug. The hoard included English and Scottish pennies, French, Brabantian and Guelders coins, as well as numerous medals, including some from MĂĽnster and Recklinghausen. Its contents bring together different types of coins and places of origin in a single find.
The Historisch Museum de Scheper in Eibergen holds the restored jug and a selection of 60 silver coins from the Haarlo hoard. The find site in Haarlo and the objects held in the museum are both part of its history.
Countryside and routes around Haarlo
South of Haarlo lies Landgoed Erve Wolink, an area of about 36 hectares with woodland, pasture, fields, avenues, hedgerows and wooded strips. The landscape around Haarlo also includes old farmhouses and farmsteads, fields, meadows and hedgerows. The landscape can therefore be appreciated both in a specific area south of the village and through features found in the surroundings of Haarlo.
More than 60 bird species have been recorded on the estate, including the goldcrest. The presence of individual species may vary by season. If you are interested in birdlife, take this seasonal aspect into account when planning the timing of your visit.
The Kluntjespotwandeling is a short walking trail that starts in Haarlo. The Haarlose Veldpad is one of the longer hiking options from Haarlo. The Wolinkkamproute is listed as a 2.69-kilometre hiking route and starts at TOP Prinsen, Eibergseweg 13, in Haarlo. This gives you a choice of a short walk, a longer hiking option and a route with a specified distance. Check current trail conditions and the starting point before setting out.
Cycling routes also lead from Haarlo towards Borculo, Eibergen and Geesteren; they follow quiet country roads. These three directions give you a guide for choosing a cycling trip, while the hiking trails offer different descriptions of their lengths.
