Gelselaar combines a state-protected village landscape with historical traces and a variety of walking options. You can get to know the village through its architectural history, choose a cultural and historical walk, or make route length and activity the focus of your plans. The specific starting points and time estimates help you choose what to focus on during your stay.

Protected Village Landscape and History

Gelselaar and the surrounding esch fields together form a state-protected village landscape. The Hervormde kerk is the present-day Waterstaatskerk; in 1841, it replaced an older chapel. The church and the village ensemble therefore offer distinct starting points if you are interested in architectural and local history.

At the Stokkink farmstead, there is a water well made of Bentheim sandstone. It dates from 1575 and is considered the village’s oldest Rijksmonument. Traces of a former havezate are also part of the cultural landscape near Gelselaar: archaeological investigations established its location and outline, and the ditches and terrain contours were made visible again. This means you can see both a dated monument and a former estate identified through research at specific locations.

At the corner of Dorpsstraat and Schoolstraat, a bronze monument to writers commemorates three literary figures from Gelselaar: H.W. Heuvel (1864–1926), H.J. Krebbers (1852–1936) and G.A. van der Lugt (1879–1966). Another local tradition remembered is the former keeping of geese. It is commemorated by a goose statue near the school on Van-Bevervoordestraat, an outdoor goose board game and a goose pasture on Bevervoordeterrein. The monument and the goose-related sites thus highlight different aspects of local history.

Walks by Distance and Theme

The Boereneschpad starts at Pannenkoekenboerderij Erve Brooks, Broekhuisdijk 5 in Gelselaar. The route is marked in both directions with blue, clog-shaped markers. The bus stops listed are Hondorp in Gelselaar and Baan in Geesteren. As markers may change through local maintenance, it is a good idea to check the current trail markings before setting out.

The Ommetje Gelselaar is 7.5 kilometres long, can be shortened and starts at Café Florijn. Numbered points indicate sights along the route; further descriptions are available in the brochure and on the information board. The Meester-Heuvel walk also starts at Café Florijn. This cultural and historical walk passes through the heart of the protected village landscape. If you are choosing between the two walks, the Ommetje offers a stated distance and the option to shorten it, while the Meester-Heuvel walk focuses on cultural history.

Another option is the Avonturenpad at Erve Brooks. This walking activity, which includes obstacles and games, takes about an hour and a half. The time estimate can help you plan your day if you are looking for an activity with a clearly defined time frame. Its obstacles and games make it different from the cultural and historical walks.

Ganzenmarkt and Ganzenrondje

The annual Ganzenmarkt takes place on the first Sunday in July in the historic village centre. It includes the selection of the best goose herder, exhibitions, demonstrations, theatre performances and appearances by regional artists. If you want to make this festival the occasion for your trip, you can factor the date into your plans; it is a recurring event, not just a one-off programme item.

The Ganzenrondje Gelselaar offers a different perspective on the village and its surroundings: the approximately 13-kilometre route is described for cycling and walking. Compared with the 7.5-kilometre Ommetje, which can be shortened, it is the longer option and can also be tackled by bike. This lets you choose according to your preferred distance and mode of transport, rather than trying to fit every local theme into a single day’s itinerary.
