Founded in 1900, Otavi was once a railway town on the railway line to Tsumeb. Nearby is Ghaub Limestone Cave, with a 2.5-kilometre cave system; it is Namibia’s third-largest cave. This gives the trip two distinct points of interest: railway history in Otavi and cave exploration nearby. The figure of 2.5 kilometres refers to the cave system, not necessarily to the route of any individual excursion.

Cave experience with clear requirements

The cave excursion offered by Ghaub is physically demanding. Visitors must crawl and climb through narrow sections, so it is not suitable for people with claustrophobia. These conditions are important when deciding whether this kind of cave exploration is right for your trip. It differs significantly from a visit where the cave is simply viewed as a landscape feature.

Access on site is also worth bearing in mind. Access to the facilities at Ghaub Lodge and the campsite is restricted to avoid disturbing overnight guests. The hiking trails at Ghaub are reserved for overnight guests. Day visits must be booked at least two days in advance, are subject to availability, and are accepted by email only. As booking conditions can change, check them with the operator before travelling.

This distinction has practical implications for accommodation planning: the hiking trails are reserved for overnight guests, while a day visit requires advance notice, availability, and an email booking. If you would like to use the trails at Ghaub, take the overnight-guest requirement into account when planning; separate booking conditions apply to day visits.

Two ways to watch rhinos

An operator announcement dated 8 November 2024 also mentioned guided rhino drives in the savannah of the Otavi Mountains and a morning “Rhino Patrol” on foot. On this tour, visitors follow the tracks of white rhinos in their natural habitat. The announcement described these activities as being available to day visitors. As it dates from 2024, check current availability with the operator in advance.

The two types of wildlife viewing mentioned differ mainly in how you get around and the time of day: a guided drive through the savannah or a morning walking tour. If you include Ghaub in your travel plans, you can first decide whether a drive or exploring on foot better suits your interests. Restrictions on access to hiking trails and facilities are separate conditions; the “Rhino Patrol” is described as a separate activity.

Otjozondjupa as the wider regional setting

Otjozondjupa is the wider regional setting for exploring beyond Otavi. Waterberg Plateau Park has abundant wildlife and unique vegetation. The park offers a different natural highlight from Otavi’s railway history and the cave nearby. The locations are distinct: Waterberg Plateau Park is in the broader destination of Otjozondjupa and should not be confused with the features of Otavi.

Waterberg Plateau Park has a rest camp with bungalows and camping facilities. If you plan to use these facilities during your visit, check in advance that they are currently operating. Guided wilderness walks may be available in the park; booking is required for both guided and unguided plateau hikes. There are also short walking trails within the resort. These short trails and the plateau hikes that require booking are different ways to explore the park on foot.
