Okahandja combines two woodcarving markets with historic sites: the Rhenish Mission Church is the city’s oldest building, and Moordkoppie commemorates a battle with many fatalities. Nearby is also Gross Barmen Resort, with its indoor thermal pool. The range of attractions therefore extends from crafts and local history to an additional excursion destination.
Woodcarving Markets in Okahandja
Visitors can buy curios at two woodcarving markets in Okahandja. At Mbangura Woodcarvers Market, craftspeople from the Mbangura community make the pieces on site and finish them there. Alongside the items for sale, the production process is therefore another distinctive aspect of this market.
A second Woodcarvers Market is located at the southern entrance to the city, opposite the Shell Service Station. If you plan to use this landmark for precise directions, check the location on site. Also confirm that the markets are currently operating before your visit.
Church and Historical Remembrance
The Rhenish Mission Church is Okahandja’s oldest building. Ph. Diehl dedicated it in 1876; it was also often used as a refuge. Its dedication and use offer two different perspectives on the history of the same building: when it was established and its role as a place of refuge.
Moordkoppie marks a specific battle. The hill is one of eight battle sites and historic sites commemorating events in which many Namibians lost their lives. On 23 August 1850, Nama forces attacked Herero people and killed about 700 of them. The historic battle took place on and around Moordkoppie in Okahandja. This historical focus therefore differs from the church’s construction and use history.
Indoor Thermal Pool Nearby
Gross Barmen Resort is 27.9 km from Okahandja, along the D1972 road. Mineral-rich spring water supplies an indoor thermal pool, where the water is cooled to about 40°C. The resort offers a different focus from the markets and historic sites in Okahandja. Road conditions and travel times may vary. Check access and current opening hours before visiting.
A Regional Look at Otjozondjupa
Waterberg Plateau Park is in the wider travel destination of Otjozondjupa. The park is home to abundant wildlife and unique vegetation. It has a rest camp with bungalows and camping facilities; check whether it is currently operating before your trip.
Guided wilderness walks are available in the park. Booking is required for both guided and unguided plateau hikes. There are also short walking trails within the resort. Check current trail conditions before setting out. This regional look at Otjozondjupa therefore offers further nature and hiking options, clearly distinct from Okahandja’s attractions.
