Keetmanshoop can be explored through two distinct themes: local history centred on the museum and church, and landscapes in the surrounding area. This lets you decide whether to focus your stay more on culture in town or also include nature destinations outside Keetmanshoop. The regional context of Karas adds further, distinct landscape connections to this choice of location.

Museum and Church in Keetmanshoop

The Keetmanshoop Museum provides information about the local Nama community and early European settlers in southern Namibia. It is housed in the old Rhenish Missionary Church and also covers the church’s founders. Its subject matter therefore ranges from the local community to the history of settlers in southern Namibia; the building itself adds its own heritage designation to these museum themes: the church was declared a national monument in 1978.

Naute Dam and the Surrounding Landscape

About 42 kilometres southwest of Keetmanshoop lies Naute Game Park. It encompasses the Naute Dam, Namibia’s second-largest dam. Several sandy shores, shallow bays and islands shape the reservoir. This waterside landscape complements the historical themes in Keetmanshoop itself with a distinct focus on the surrounding area.

Camping, fishing and boating are possible in Naute Game Park with permits. These are available from the offices of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism. Planning therefore involves not only choosing between the activities, but also obtaining the relevant permit. Before visiting, check the current permit arrangements with the ministry offices, especially if one of these activities is essential to your plans.

Another Monument in the Surrounding Area

The Quiver Tree Forest on Farm Gariganus is 14 kilometres northwest of Keetmanshoop; it was declared a national monument in 1955. A 2015 article described it as a major tourist attraction in the area. The Quiver Tree Forest thus brings together two aspects: its 1955 heritage designation and its tourist importance, as described in 2015. Together with the location of Naute Game Park about 42 kilometres southwest, these directions distinguish the two destinations in the surrounding area.

More Landscape and History Themes in Karas

The wider travel destination of Karas offers additional, distinct landscape and history themes. The 55-metre-high Bogenfels is located in Tsau //Khaeb National Park. In 1908, railway worker Zacharias Lewala discovered a diamond in Kolmanskop near LĂĽderitz; afterwards, most of the park remained untouched and closed to the public for almost a century. Fish River Canyon defines the eastern part of /Ai-/Ais Hot Springs Game Park. The two natural features are clearly distinct: Bogenfels is a single rock formation, while Fish River Canyon defines the eastern part of another park.
