Seeheim’s history can be traced through a building, a railway connection and several turning points. The Seeheim Hotel was first built in 1896 as accommodation for the Schutztruppe; it later became a hotel. In the 1940s and 1950s, Seeheim was larger and more significant than Keetmanshoop. These milestones provide a timeframe for the town’s history.

Seeheim: Hotel and Railway in the Town’s History

The Seeheim Hotel was built in 1896 from local stone as accommodation for the Schutztruppe, the German colonial troops. In the 1920s, it was converted into a hotel. This sequence shows how the building’s use changed: accommodation for the troops was followed by its hotel years. This places the history of the building in a timeline spanning more than a single date.

Seeheim was once larger and better known than Keetmanshoop; the town is also described as larger and more significant than Keetmanshoop in the 1940s and 1950s. Its railway connection to the north, the coast and South Africa contributed to its importance at the time. The connection is therefore an important part of the town’s history.

In 1974, the B2 was rerouted; the Seeheim Hotel closed that same year. These two details describe different changes in the same year: the rerouting of the B2 and the end of the hotel’s operations. Together with the building’s construction in 1896 and its conversion in the 1920s, they form a clear timeline.

Karas: Landscapes and History in a Broader Context

The wider travel destination of Karas adds other landscape and history themes. The Fish River Canyon defines the eastern part of the /Ai-/Ais Hot Springs Game Park. Tsau //Khaeb National Park is also in the Karas destination. These parks and landscapes offer a regional perspective different from the local history of Seeheim.

The rock arch Bogenfels, which is 55 metres high, is located in Tsau //Khaeb National Park. The Fish River Canyon and Bogenfels represent different scales: the canyon defines part of the park, while Bogenfels is a single named rock formation with a specific height. When exploring Karas through its landscapes, you can distinguish between a vast landscape feature and a striking individual destination.

The history of Tsau //Khaeb National Park is also part of this regional context. After railway worker Zacharias Lewala discovered a diamond in Kolmanskop near LĂĽderitz, most of the park remained untouched and closed to the public for almost a century from 1908. The lengthy closure and the discovery associated with it add historical context to the landscape themes.

A concession offers a day tour from Lüderitz to Pomona Ghost Town and the Bogenfels rock arch. Before planning, check whether the tour runs on your travel dates and what access conditions apply. This lets you consider the tour as a separate excursion option rather than equating it with Seeheim’s history or the parks’ landscape features.

You can organize your travel choices around different interests: Seeheim represents a history encompassing its hotel, railway and the rerouting of the B2. Karas offers further perspectives on park history and landscapes, as well as a day tour from LĂĽderitz whose dates and access conditions should be checked in advance. This allows you to weigh local history and regional themes separately without treating them as a single attraction.
