Tivat combines maritime history and a protected city park with opportunities for hiking, cycling and exploring the water. This offers a choice of different themes to focus on during your stay: historical collections, nature watching or physical activity. Tivat has an international airport and is considered easily accessible for tourists. Check current flight connections separately before travelling.

Maritime history and local heritage

The “Etnografsko nasljeđe Tivta” collection in the medieval Buća complex focuses on traditional clothing, crafts, prominent regional figures and intangible heritage. It thus offers a glimpse into traditional ways of life. The Zbirka pomorskog nasljeđa in Porto Montenegro has a different focus: it covers maritime traditions and the Adriatic’s nautical history. The P-821 Heroj submarine is also part of the collection at the Muzej podmornica submarine museum.

The Bokeljska mornarica also brings together history and living tradition. Founded in 809, it was recognised as Montenegro’s intangible cultural heritage in 2013 and follows traditional ceremonies in Tivat. The Jadran sailing ship is also associated with seafaring: built in 1933, it can be visited during seasonal Open Day events. Those interested in exploring cultural history will find a variety of ways to do so, from ethnographic topics and maritime collections to ceremonies and a ship that can be visited during seasonal events.

City park and nature nearby

Veliki gradski park was established in 1892 on former estates belonging to the Radali and Verona families. It has been protected as a natural monument since 2015. Nearby Tivatska Solila offers a different kind of natural environment: the wetland lies on the migratory route of birds and serves as a resting and feeding ground; some species also overwinter there. It has been protected as a special nature reserve since 2008. The city park and Solila thus represent different aspects of nature: a historic park and a habitat for migratory birds.

Historic sites can also be found nearby. On the nearby island of Gospa od Milosti, there is a Franciscan monastery and a church; pilgrims have visited the island continuously for more than 500 years. On nearby Miholjska Prevlaka, also known as Flower Island, you can visit the monastery built in the 6th century and spend time at the beach. The nearby Crkva Rođenja Marijinog church in Gornja Lastva, also known as mala Gospa, was built in 1410; its Baroque altar was made by Venetian masters.

Explore on foot, by bike and on the water

There are marked cycle paths on the town’s streets. Vrmac and the Luštica Peninsula have trails for hiking, mountain hiking and mountain biking, with views of the Bay of Kotor and the Adriatic. These options vary in activity and scenery: the marked cycle paths are on the town’s streets, while the trails on Vrmac and Luštica combine physical activity with views of the bay and the open sea.

For water activities, Tivatski zaliv and PrĹľno Bay are known as diving sites; their described features include clear water, shipwrecks and Mediterranean marine flora. The Neptun-Mimoza diving club offers dive training as well as rental and maintenance of complete diving equipment. Stand-up paddleboarding is also an option for beginners. Recreational kayaking is also available in the Bay of Tivat, in calm waters and natural surroundings. The options range from seeing what lies beneath the water to getting around on its surface.

Another way to explore the area is the “Život na Luštici” scenic route. It can be reached from the Tivat–Budva road and passes Bjelila, Krašići, Zabrđe and Klince before continuing through villages on Luštica towards Luštica Bay. Café and restaurant terraces line the Pine promenade. Hotel Pine’s krempita is considered a popular dessert among locals and visitors—a local culinary connection to Tivat’s cultural and scenic attractions.
