In the far northwest of the Municipality of Šavnik lies the Dragišnica and Komarnica Nature Park. Covering 2,994 hectares, it offers opportunities to explore mountain landscapes, canyon valleys and gorges. The Dragišnica forest complex lies within the park on the southern slopes of Durmitor. The Durmitor mountain range also forms part of the Šavnik area. Forests, mountains and gorges shape the landscape in all its variety.
Hiking trails for a range of abilities
Šavnik offers more than 20 mountain and hiking trails. As trails may be added or removed, the selection can change; it is worth checking the latest information before setting out on a particular hike. In the nature park, the range described stretches from easy walking paths to mountain climbs at elevations of almost 2,000 metres. The trails connect villages, plateaus, canyon rims and high mountain peaks.
The marked mountain trail to Boljske Grede is considerably more challenging: it is technically difficult and suitable only for visitors who are physically well prepared. Boljske Grede is a destination for hikers and climbers. From the rocks, panoramic views open up over the deep Komarnica Canyon, surrounding mountain peaks and dense forest landscapes.
The trail to Skakavica Waterfall has a different character. It leads through an appealing natural landscape and is suitable for leisurely walks and photography. The waterfall is about 80 metres high and seasonal: it becomes active during snowmelt and heavy rain. The contrast with the challenging trail to Boljske Grede shows how varied the hiking experiences described here can be.
Canyons, water and cycling routes
Nevidio Canyon is a destination for adventure tourism. Narrow passages, high rock walls, clear water and natural pools define its character. Its history is also remarkable: the canyon was first traversed in its entirety in 1965, after long being considered unknown and impassable to humans.
Grabovica Canyon is about one kilometre long; its varied route includes waterfalls and natural pools. The Komarnica River, in turn, is a destination for nature lovers, hikers, anglers and photographers. The river is rich in brown trout and grayling.
The nature park’s mountain roads, forest tracks and plateaus between canyons and mountain ranges make it well suited to recreational and mountain biking. Cycling routes also include technically challenging sections near Komarnica Canyon and at higher elevations.
Monasteries and medieval tombstones
Podmalinsko Monastery was built around 1252 on the right bank of the Bukovica River. It is one of the most significant examples of religious architecture in the Municipality of Šavnik. The Monastery of Saint George in Bijela was founded in the 11th century in the village of Bijela, on the river of the same name.
A significant necropolis of stećci, medieval tombstones, is located near Pošćenje. Alongside its monasteries, Šavnik therefore also offers a glimpse of another form of historical heritage.
