A fly-fishing area in Berane was established in 2009 and extends about 2.9 kilometres upstream, from the Talumski Bridge to the new fire station. Its fixed endpoints provide clear orientation along the stretch. The municipality’s fishing waters include four areas in total: two for fly fishing, one for spinning and one general fishing area. If you plan to fish, check the rules and permits with the local fishing organisation.

The Lim, the Gorge and Trails Through the Landscape

Rafting is also one of the activities on the Lim: the stretch through Berane includes the Tifran Gorge. Check local availability and safety arrangements before setting out. Tifran can be reached from Berane along the route following the Lim.

Berane lies in the Lim Valley. To the west are Bjelasica and its foothills; to the east, Cmiljevica and Turjak. The main ridge of Bjelasica extends for 20 kilometres to Lubnice and Berane; the Suvodo–Šiška zone contains five glacial lakes. This geographical layout provides a setting for varied routes and landscapes, without limiting all activities to a single area.

Cyclists have a specific route to refer to: the BA 01 cycling route, “Krug oko Berana” (“Circuit around Berane”), is 22.32 kilometres long. Its starting point is four kilometres from the town centre, and it runs mostly through rural areas. In addition, marked mountain-bike routes connect Berane with Bjelasica, Cmiljevica and Turjak. Check the markings and trail conditions in advance.

The Berane area also has marked hiking trails that are generally shorter than ten kilometres and not demanding. Many have designated viewpoints with a shelter, table and benches. The hiking trails therefore differ in character from the precisely measured cycling route; it is advisable to check current local infrastructure and trail conditions.

Memorial Sites and Buildings

A memorial complex commemorating the battles of the People’s Liberation Struggle is located in the Jasikovac park forest. Its central feature is the Spomen-dom, built in 1977 to a design by architect Bogdan Bogdanović. The memorial house of Duke Gavro Vuković is in the town centre. Its rooms and collection include a gallery, the former study with its library, a sabre and numerous manuscripts. According to experts, the house is the only secular monument with Secessionist features in Upper Polimlje. Check visiting arrangements in advance.

The Vakufska kuća, in the inner town centre, offers a different insight into architectural culture. The ground floor contains a large salon; above it are an extensive library and rooms for prayer. The building’s various rooms give it a different character from the memorial house, with its study and personal belongings.

The area’s monasteries are also cultural destinations. Šudikova is 4.5 kilometres from the centre of Berane, tucked away in the Tifran Gorge on the route from Berane to Bijelo Polje. It was known as an important spiritual and cultural centre with renowned schools; ask locally about access conditions. Ćelije Monastery is in the village of Kaludra, nine kilometres from Berane, on the Kaludarska rijeka River, and is dedicated to Saint Luke the Apostle.

City Life and Regional Cuisine

For a break in town, Glavna ulica offers a taste of everyday life, with restaurants, cafés and pastry shops. Traditional Upper Polimlje cuisine includes priganice, kačamak, cheese, pita and mantije. These dishes are characteristic of the region and should not be attributed to Berane alone. A stay can thus bring together a variety of interests: river activities and trails alongside memorial sites, monasteries and the town’s offerings.
