Lake Biograd is Montenegro’s largest mountain lake—and a distinctive gateway to Kolašin’s natural surroundings. But the municipality is about more than water and landscapes: other highlights include summer activities, winter sports and historic sites in the town of Kolašin. Which aspect takes center stage depends on whether you want to be active outdoors, follow a trail through history or discover different facets of the region.

Mountain Lake and Canyon Landscapes

Lake Biograd lies at an altitude of 1,094 meters in the municipality of Kolašin. Parts of Biogradska Gora National Park also lie within the municipality. The Biogradska River and the Bendovac stream flow into the lake; the Jezerštica River flows out of it. The lake is accessible by motor vehicle. Check access conditions before your trip.

A tourism update dated May 6, 2026, mentions dozens of canyons in the municipality of Kolašin, seven of which are highlighted as particularly attractive. It also noted that commercial excursions to the canyons covered were not yet generally accessible; a small number of adventurers were an exception. Check current access conditions before making plans.

Outdoor Activities and Insights into Wildlife

In summer, outdoor activities in Kolašin include hiking, cycling and rafting. This offers different ways to enjoy the outdoors: on foot, by bike or on a rafting trip. Individual routes and activities may change, so it is worth checking the details of your plans.

The educational center in Kolašin has informative and interactive exhibits about the wildlife of the national park. The focus is on the biology and ecology of the bear. If you plan to visit the center, check the current visitor arrangements beforehand.

Winter Sports in Kolašin

The Kolašin 1600 ski resort is located at an altitude of 1,600 meters. In addition to skiing, it offers snowboarding, sledding, hiking and snowmobiling; the availability of activities may vary by season. Kolašin 1450 is notable for different figures: it has 26 kilometers of ski runs and four modern ski lifts. Ski infrastructure can change over time, so check the latest information before making plans. The two ski resorts can thus be compared by their respective elevations, activities, run lengths and numbers of lifts.

City History and Collections

The fortifications of the town of Kolašin were built in 1651 and initially served military purposes. Between November 1943 and August 1944, Kolašin was Montenegro’s wartime capital; in 1944, the town hosted the ZAVNO meetings. These dates provide a clear time frame for the town’s history.

The Kolašin Museum is located in the town center. Its collections include historical and ethnographic holdings, as well as a painting collection. The Partisan Memorial Cemetery is in Brezina, in the northern part of Kolašin. The museum and cemetery offer insights into different aspects of local history, without requiring them to be the same kind of historic site.

Getting There and Getting Around

Kolašin is accessible by train, bus or car. The Belgrade–Bar railway line serves the town; the station is 1.5 kilometers from the town.
