For trip planning, Kiduliai and Kidulių eldership offer different points of interest: an educational trail along wooded slopes by the Nemunas, a memorial in the Kiduliai cemetery, and other cultural sites in Kaimelis and Palankinė. Nature observation, archaeological heritage, remembrance, and art each offer a different focus. The locations are not all in the same place: the educational trail and the chapel-pillar monument are in Kiduliai. Kukarskė Hillfort and the “Prisiminimų parkas” recreation area are in Kidulių eldership; the memorial sites in Palankinė and cultural sites in Kaimelis are located there as well.

The Nemunas Educational Trail

The Kiduliai educational trail runs along wooded slopes by the Nemunas. Here, you can observe characteristic plant life as well as birds and animals. Eleven information stations divide the route and add an explanatory dimension to its nature theme. Observation and information go hand in hand: the trail draws attention both to plant and animal life and to the stations. If you would like to make nature a focus of your trip, this trail offers a specific way to do so, distinct from the historical memorial sites.

Remembrance and Culture in Kidulių Eldership

The chapel-pillar monument in the Kiduliai cemetery commemorates the Lithuanian book smugglers of the town. It was created by sculptor V. Eimanavičius. The graves of French soldiers are in Palankinė. The two sites have different historical associations: the monument commemorates the book smugglers of Kiduliai, while the graves are connected with French soldiers. Kukarskė Hillfort is an archaeological monument of national significance in Kidulių eldership. It adds an archaeological focus to these memorial sites.

In Kaimelis, you will find different forms of monument and art. The “Pavasarininkų paminklas” of Kaimelis Parish dates from 1938. A cross in the churchyard of Kaimelis Church commemorates priest J. Pečiulis; it was created by sculptor V. Cikana. The painting “Šv. Rokas” is also kept in the parish’s Church of St. Michael the Archangel. Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis painted it in 1907. The dates refer to different works: 1938 is the date of the monument, and 1907 that of the painting. This makes it possible to distinguish the monument’s date, the remembrance embodied by the cross, and the painting kept in the church as different cultural points of interest.

Another Landscape Highlight

The “Prisiminimų parkas” recreation area, established by R. Karopčikas, is located in the Nemunas floodplains of Kidulių eldership. Here, the emphasis is on its setting in the floodplain landscape and its role as a recreation area—a different focus from the monuments and artworks. This adds another landscape-related point of interest to your trip planning, alongside nature observation and culture.
