Girėnai combines water recreation with cultural history. At the eastern edge of Šakiai lies the Girėnų Pond; Girėnai is also home to the old Evangelical Lutheran cemetery of Šakiai, a registered cultural heritage site. Together, they give the place distinct, clearly defined points of interest.
Water and landscape
The Girėnų Pond is a 6.1-hectare reservoir. Its shoreline is 1.9 km long, and its average depth is 2.8 m. Low banks and agricultural land surround the body of water; a municipal green space lies on its southern side.
Area, shoreline length and average depth describe different characteristics: the pond’s extent, the course of its shoreline and its average depth. Two distinct features of the surroundings add to these: agricultural land and municipal green space on the southern side. This means the landscape cannot be described solely in terms of its water surface.
The Girėnų-Valiulių ežero poilsiavietė recreation area is a place for water recreation in Girėnai, in Šakiai District. This makes water recreation, alongside the pond itself, one of the place’s clearly identified themes.
Triathlon as a sporting theme
The traditional “Mažasis Girėnų triatlonas” was held for the 40th time in 2025 as an anniversary edition. The course details are from an earlier year: at the 2024 competition, the triathlon comprised 400 m of swimming, 19 km of cycling and 6 km of running. At 19 km, the cycling leg was the longest; the other disciplines were running and swimming. The year references thus distinguish the 2025 anniversary edition from the course format of the 2024 competition.
Cultural heritage and crafts
The old Evangelical Lutheran cemetery of Šakių is registered as a cultural heritage site and is located on Muziejaus Street in Girėnai. Its name links its denomination and historic character with a specific street location.
Textile handcraft offers a different cultural perspective: in 2016, Irena Sakalauskienė wove a ten-metre-long cloth for aprons in the community centre’s premises. Its stated purpose and length make the work a tangible example of a specific craft.
The cemetery and the weaving represent different cultural traces: one is a registered cultural heritage site, the other a textile work created in the community centre’s premises. Those choosing Girėnai for its cultural connections will therefore find both the named historic site and an example of craft activity.
Plan a separate visit to the Zanavykų Museum
The Zanavykų Museum was relocated from Girėnai to the carriage house at Zypliai Manor. Therefore, associate it with Zypliai, not as a place to visit in Girėnai. If you are planning a visit, check current visitor arrangements separately.
For getting oriented in Girėnai, the main points of interest are the landscape by the pond, water recreation, the registered cemetery and the historic weaving. The museum adds a separate destination in Zypliai to a cultural trip.
