Two hillforts give Grinaičiai a specific cultural and historical focus: Balnakalnis and Žydkapiai. Their different dates make the area interesting for travelers who want to place historical sites in their historical context. At the same time, the connection extends beyond the area: both sites are part of the Sudargas Hillfort Complex. When planning, it is therefore worth distinguishing between the local names and the broader regional context.

Two hillforts, different periods

Balnakalnis is dated to the first half of the first millennium AD. Žydkapiai is dated from the beginning of the first millennium AD to the beginning of the second millennium AD. The difference is not just in how the dates are expressed: Balnakalnis is assigned to the first half of a millennium, while the dating for Žydkapiai spans a significantly longer period. The periods overlap in the early first millennium, so they do not represent a simple sequence of two clearly separate phases. Comparing the two hillforts allows you to contrast a narrower dating range with a much longer span of time.

Grinaičiai in the Sudargas Hillfort Complex

The Sudargas Hillfort Complex comprises five sites: Balnakalnis, Žydkapiai, Bevardis, Pilaitė, and Vorpilis. Two are in Grinaičiai and three in Burgaičiai. The complex stretches for approximately one kilometer from east to west along the course of the river. In historical, archaeological, and cultural terms, it is considered the most significant complex after the hillforts of Kernavė. In the Middle Ages, one of the most important defensive castles in the fights against the Crusaders stood here.

From the five peaks, you can look out over the Nemunas, forests, and fields. The slopes on the Nemunas banks near the hillforts rise up to 40 meters above the riverbed. For travelers who want to take in both culture and landscape, the complex combines historical context with views of the river, forests, and fields.

Plan tours and dates

The distance for walking exclusively between the hillforts of the Sudargas Complex is given as 2.5 kilometers. Guided tours are available in the complex; guide services can be booked by prior arrangement. If a guided tour suits your plans, confirm the arrangements with the tourism provider before your visit. The distance and the tour are two different planning considerations: one concerns walking between the sites, while the other requires an arrangement in advance.

The event date may also be relevant when choosing when to travel: Sudargas Hillfort Day takes place every year at the hillforts during the Rasos midsummer celebrations. If you want to plan your trip around a particular year's event, check the local information for that year in advance.

Choose the right geographical focus

When looking for a holiday apartment, first decide whether Grinaičiai itself or the Sudargas Complex as a whole is your focus. The local perspective includes two of the five hillforts; the regional context also includes Burgaičiai.
