Priekulė combines a 19th-century town centre characteristic of a larger town in Lithuania Minor with a location beside a scenic bend in the Minija. The town’s history can be explored through a range of themes: Lithuanian-language printing houses, an Evangelical Lutheran parish, the memory of writer Ieva Simonaitytė, and museums devoted to resistance and exile. Those who want to explore cultural history from more than one perspective will find several reasons to visit here.

Townscape and the History of Lithuania Minor

The 19th-century town centre is considered characteristic of a larger town in Lithuania Minor. At the same time, Priekulė lies beside a scenic bend in the Minija. The historic townscape and river landscape thus offer two distinct sides of the destination—an appealing combination if you want to include both culture and scenery in your trip.

J. F. Šrėderis and J. Traušis ran printing houses in Priekulė that produced Lithuanian-language publications. An Evangelical Lutheran parish was founded here at the end of the 16th century and is considered the oldest in the Klaipėda region. Together, these places and institutions draw attention to the history of written culture and the church. The “Šventvakarių Ėvė” monument also stands in the centre: dedicated to Ieva Simonaitytė, it commemorates the history of Lithuania Minor.

Museums of Literature, Resistance and Exile

The I. Simonaitytė Memorial Museum is located in the writer’s summer house, where she lived and worked during the last decades of her life. Visitors can see authentic interiors, personal belongings, her library, manuscripts, photographs and first editions of her books. The place where she lived and the written records of her life are presented side by side: the museum offers an impression of both the summer house and Simonaitytė’s literary legacy.

The museum organises educational programmes, guided tours and cultural events focusing on the history of Lithuania Minor, Lithuanian culture and the writer’s creative legacy. Individual offerings may change; if you have a particular programme item in mind, it is best to check its current availability in advance.

The Museum of the History of Freedom Struggles and Exile offers a different focus. Its open-air exhibition includes an authentic exile wagon and a reconstructed partisan bunker. Its educational activities, guided tours and exhibitions also address resistance, exile and local heritage. Programme formats at this museum may also change. A quick check of current availability can help if you want to plan your visit around a particular tour or activity.

The two museums take different approaches: the I. Simonaitytė Memorial Museum focuses on a writer, her summer house and her works; the other museum centres on resistance and exile. This contrast makes it easier to choose if you would rather devote your time to literary history or to the topics of resistance and exile.

Events and the History of Trade

Equestrian competitions for the Edmundo Klimov Cup are held annually in Vingio Park. As event plans may change, check the dates if you want to attend the competitions during your trip.

Priekulė is also connected with the region’s trading history: the Strykis fish market operated for centuries between Priekulė and Dreverna. As part of the past, it adds another perspective on the region to the history of the museums and the town.
