Veisiejai lies between Lakes Ančia and Veisiejai and is located in Veisiejai Regional Park. In the town, architectural and museum history sit alongside a park of its own; at the same time, the larger regional park’s tourist routes pass through a range of landscapes. This makes the destination a place where specific cultural themes meet a landscape of lakes and parks.
Lakes, routes and park history
The regional park includes 37 lakes. At 490.8 hectares, Ančia is the park’s largest lake. Ten tourist routes run along its shores, through the hilly Šlavantų kraštas, around Kapčiamiestis and in the Petroškai Forest. The network of routes thus extends across several named areas; the routes do not cover Veisiejai alone. Visitors interested in nature and landscapes can see these places as distinct areas within the regional park.
Veisiejai is also home to Veisiejai Manor Park. This dendrologically valuable park covers 9.53 hectares and was designated a state-protected natural heritage site in 2007. One of its specific features is a circle of 21 lime trees planted in the second half of the 18th century. The park’s area, protected status and planting history each give it a distinct historical and landscape connection.
Architecture and local history
The stone Church of St. George was built in 1817 and is a listed architectural monument. Its combination of Baroque and Classical forms is considered unique in Lithuania. It offers a clearly defined architectural focus: its construction date and stylistic features can be explored together, without reducing the church to a single era.
The Veisiejų krašto muziejus museum covers various chapters of local and regional history. Its subjects include the history of the school in Veisiejai, the deportation of people from this region and other local historical topics. The museum also displays material about Liudvikas Lazaris Zamenhof, an ophthalmologist and creator of the international language Esperanto. Zamenhof came to Veisiejai in 1885 and completed the development of the Esperanto language there. Other featured figures include organist and composer Juozas Neimontas and poet Sigitas Geda.
The Albino Jarmala Calendar Museum has a different collection focus. It contains more than 4,000 exhibits, including calendars from countries around the world. Visits are possible by prior telephone arrangement; arrange your appointment in advance and confirm it before your visit.
An experience route and visitor centre
The 3.7-kilometre “Stebuklingų ančių” (Magical Ducks) experience route runs through Veisiejai and features six symbolic ducks. The same offering includes a guided, game-based programme that introduces the history of Veisiejai, its cultural and natural heritage, and the works of writers who live there. Participants hear a legend and search for six ducks hidden around the town. The route and the guided programme therefore have different emphases: the route is described by its length, while the guided format centres on games, storytelling and a search.
The programme starts at Dariaus ir Girėno g. 6 and takes place by prior telephone booking at +370 612 33044. Check the phone number again before making plans. The Veisiejai Regional Park Visitor Centre also hosts the indoor exhibition “Gyvenimas tarp vandenų” (Life Among the Waters). Together with the park routes, it complements the town’s history with an exhibition perspective focused specifically on life among bodies of water.
When planning a trip, you can explore Veisiejai according to your interests: the church and museums offer cultural highlights, while Manor Park and the regional park bring in nature and landscape themes on different spatial scales. The named routes are spread across several parts of the regional park, whereas the “Stebuklingų ančių” experience route specifically runs through Veisiejai. If you are making specific plans, check the telephone arrangements for the programme and the Calendar Museum.
