Meteliai offers a range of ways to enjoy a stay: landscapes viewed from above, seasonal birdwatching nearby and the architecture of the Church of the Transfiguration of Christ. You can also book a guided tour. The details below will help you choose a focus, depending on whether you are mainly looking for views, wildlife watching, architecture or a guided experience.

Views from the tower: lake, meadow and village

The Meteliai observation tower stands in the southern part of the village, on Road No. 181 Seirijai–Simna–Igliauka, and is 15 m high. From there, you can see Lake Metelis, the village and the wet Kimsinė Meadow, which is important for birds. You can also see the Papėčiai hillfort site on the other side of the lake, as well as a narrow stretch of Lake Dusia. The view therefore extends from the village itself to landscape features beyond it.

The bodies of water can be clearly distinguished: Lake Metelis is one of the features visible from the tower, while only a narrow stretch of Lake Dusia can be seen. The Papėčiai hillfort site also has a clearly defined position in the view—on the other side of the lake. These distinctions help you appreciate the view as more than just an unspecified view of a lake.

Birdwatching in the warmer months

The bay of Lake Metelis, in the vicinity of Meteliai, offers a different way to experience nature. During the warmer months, you can observe flocks of mute swans, black diving birds and ducks there. If you want birdwatching to be a feature of your stay, the warmer months are the specific seasonal guide.

This is different from the view from the tower: the bay is all about the groups of birds, while the tower offers a panorama of the lake, meadow, village and other visible places. Both offer something of interest, though they relate to the landscape around Meteliai in different ways.

A church with an eclectic architectural style

The Church of the Transfiguration of Christ in Meteliai adds an architectural point of interest alongside the views and wildlife watching. Its style is eclectic, combining Neoclassical and Neo-Baroque forms. Here, eclectic does not mean that the church can be assigned to just one style; it is the combination of different architectural vocabularies that defines it. For travellers who take architecture into account when choosing a destination, this combination is the main attraction: two styles together shape the church’s architectural character.

Guided tours and travel planning

You can book a guided tour at the visitor centre of Meteliai Regional Park. If a guided experience suits your travel interests, it is a separate planning consideration alongside the views, birdwatching and architecture. Include the booking in your travel plans and confirm your preferred date directly with the visitor centre.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Meteliai, you can consider your travel dates and interests together. If you are especially interested in the birdwatching described above, plan your visit for the warmer months. The observation tower and church architecture appeal to different interests and can be considered separately when choosing your destination.
