Garden and Mountain Views in Katse

In the village of Katse in the Thaba-Tseka District, the Katse Botanical Garden covers 17 hectares. It is home to a diverse birdlife as well as medicinal, ornamental and useful plants. This combination brings together three distinct plant groups and a varied animal life, giving the garden a clear botanical character. If you are interested in plants and nature, Katse offers a specific focus for planning your trip.

Katse Village was developed in the early 1990s and offers beautiful views of the Katse Reservoir and Lesotho’s rugged mountain landscape. The garden and village views offer different highlights: the garden draws your attention to plants and birds, while the panorama puts the reservoir and mountains at its center. This lets you consider botanical diversity and scenery as two separate interests when making your travel plans.

Planning Presentations and Dam Wall Tours

Presentations providing an overview of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, its benefits and impacts, as well as tours of the Katse Dam wall, are scheduled for 09:00 and 14:00 on weekdays, and 09:00, 11:00 and 14:00 on weekends. You can direct booking inquiries to LHDA at (+266) 22910377 or 52253200. Before travelling, confirm with LHDA that the times and contact details apply to your visit.

When planning your trip and accommodation, it helps to distinguish between the nature-related attractions and the scheduled program: the garden and views are attractions in their own right, while presentations and dam wall tours are tied to specific times. If the Lesotho Highlands Water Project is your main focus, first confirm the timing and plan the rest of your trip accordingly. The garden also remains a separate reason to explore Katse’s plant and birdlife.

Lesotho as a Broader Nature Destination

Lesotho, the wider travel destination, offers other nature-related attractions beyond the features of Katse Village. At 3,482 metres, Thabana Ntlenyana is Lesotho’s highest geographical point. In Sehlabathebe National Park in Lesotho, you can fish for trout in the Tsoelikana River. On the same river, a waterfall drops over a low cliff into a natural swimming pool. These examples illustrate different aspects of nature: a geographical superlative, an opportunity for fishing, and a waterfall with a natural pool.

Lesotho’s plant life also varies with the seasons. Rare, heath-like mountain fynbos areas with aloes, irises and other flowering plants grow on the upper slopes of Ts’ehlanyane National Park. They bloom especially profusely in spring. In Bokong Nature Reserve, the Lepaqoa Falls plunge over a 60-metre-high cliff; in winter, they often freeze into a column of ice. How often this happens depends on conditions.

For a longer hike in the wider travel destination of Lesotho, a 32-kilometre route taking two to three days leads from Bokong Nature Reserve to Ts’ehlanyane National Park across an alpine plateau sometimes called the Roof of Africa. Lepaqoa Falls and this hiking route are different nature-related attractions in the area around Bokong Nature Reserve. There is a separate practical consideration for the access roads to Sehlabathebe National Park: all are unpaved and require vehicles with high ground clearance; four-wheel drive is recommended. Check road conditions again before setting out.
