Morija is considered Lesotho’s city of the arts. In Maseru District, its museum history and contemporary culture stand side by side; Thaba Bosiu offers a different historical perspective on the Basotho nation. The places have distinct focuses: cultural institutions in Morija and the former political, cultural and spiritual centre at Thaba Bosiu.

Morija: Museum history and art

The Morija Museum & Archives houses the oldest still-operating museum and archive in the Kingdom of Lesotho. It officially opened in 1956 and moved into its current permanent premises in 1989. These two dates mark different milestones in the institution’s history.

Current exhibitions cover topics including the origin of the universe, meteorites and continental drift, as well as geology and dinosaur fossils. The range therefore extends from cosmic and geological questions to the history of the Earth. Also featured are the cultures of hunter-gatherers and the history and culture of the Basotho. Maps, photographs and other exhibition materials complement these topics. Lesotho’s animals are also included: mammals, birds and reptiles are covered; some of the mammals featured live or have lived in Lesotho. If particular exhibition topics are important to your visit, check the latest information in advance.

Together with the museum, the Morija Arts Centre and The Hub @ Morija form the core of Morija’s Cultural Precinct. The Arts Centre hosts exhibitions of art and crafts, workshops and music events. The institutions have different emphases: the museum connects natural and cultural history, while the Arts Centre’s activities focus on art, crafts and events.

Morija’s festival history includes the Morija Arts & Cultural Festival: from 1999 to 2013, the town hosted this nationally recognised festival. This timeframe distinguishes the festival’s historical period from the activities of the cultural institutions.

Thaba Bosiu and the history of the Basotho

Thaba Bosiu National Monument is also located in Maseru District. From 1824 to 1870, it served as the political, cultural and spiritual centre of the Basotho nation. This places Thaba Bosiu in a much earlier timeframe than Morija’s museum history, whose official opening took place in 1956. The comparison shows two different historical perspectives within the district: the history of an institution and the earlier role of a national centre.

Another facet belongs to the wider travel destination of Lesotho: hiking and cycling trails are mapped in the hills of the wider area around Morija. This adds a landscape perspective to the cultural themes. If you are planning a specific outing, check local information about access and trail conditions in advance. Thabana Ntlenyana provides a point of reference for the country’s elevation: at 3,482 metres, it is Lesotho’s highest geographical point.
