At 3,482 metres, Thabana Ntlenyana is Lesotho’s highest geographical point. Katse Village offers views of the Katse Reservoir and the country’s rugged mountain landscape. Lesotho thus reveals a variety of natural sights: from a striking high point and views of water and mountains to flowering plants on mountain slopes, waterfalls and a multi-day hike. You can shape your trip around whether you are particularly interested in mountain landscapes, seasonal nature or physical activity.

Flowers and ice as seasonal highlights

Rare, heath-like mountain fynbos grows on the upper slopes of Ts’ehlanyane National Park. The flowering plants found there include aloes, irises and other species. They bloom especially abundantly in spring. If plants and seasonal natural scenery are your main interest, this spring bloom is a good reason to consider your travel dates accordingly.

The Lepaqoa Falls in Bokong Nature Reserve offer a different seasonal highlight. They plunge over a 60-metre-high cliff and often freeze into a column of ice in winter. The spring bloom at Ts’ehlanyane and the winter ice formation at Lepaqoa Falls thus represent different natural sights and seasons. The falls often freeze, but this should not be taken as a guarantee that they will do so every winter.

The Tsoelikana River: Waterfall and fishing

In Sehlabathebe National Park, a waterfall on the Tsoelikana River plunges over a low cliff into a natural swimming pool. Trout fishing is also possible in the river. The Tsoelikana River is therefore associated with both a natural feature and a fishing opportunity: at the waterfall, the cliff and pool take centre stage; in the river, it is trout fishing. Both interests share the river as their setting, but remain distinct nature and activity experiences.

Plan your hike and journey

Bokong Nature Reserve is the starting point for a 32-kilometre hike to Ts’ehlanyane National Park. The route takes two to three days and crosses an alpine plateau sometimes known as the “Roof of Africa.” Allow two to three days for the hike. Check current local conditions before planning the route.

Getting to Sehlabathebe National Park is a separate planning consideration: all access roads are unpaved and require vehicles with high ground clearance; four-wheel drive is recommended. As road conditions can change, check them before setting out. This keeps the special natural sights and the practical access requirements as distinct, easy-to-plan aspects of your trip.

Motoho and local food culture

Local food culture offers another way to experience Lesotho. The traditional porridge Motoho is served in the country’s villages. It adds a culinary perspective to the nature and hiking themes and can complement mountain landscapes, waterfalls and seasonal plants when exploring the country.
