Raganu katls is a protected natural feature in the Nurmiži Strict Nature Reserve. The ravine can be viewed only from the upper lookout point. Its unusual shape makes it a striking introduction to the natural attractions of Sigulda Municipality: various watercourses have created a large suffosion funnel, or ravine, here.

Natural Features and Trails

Gauja National Park also extends into Sigulda Municipality, combining recreation with nature conservation. More than 800 vascular plant species, 149 bird species and 48 mammal species have been recorded throughout the park. Ways to explore the landscape include more than 100 kilometres of hiking trails, as well as cycling routes in the park. This brings nature observation and physical activity together with the national park’s conservation mission.

The geological dimensions of Raganu katls can be described more precisely: the funnel, or ravine, formed by watercourses is 30 metres high and 20 metres wide; the rock walls reach a maximum height of 20 metres. The strictly protected reserve zone may be crossed only along a designated route marked on the map. Plan your visit accordingly and check the route in advance.

Another rock formation is Gūtmaņala, a grotto in the yellowish-red sandstone of the Gauja Formation. It is 18.8 metres long and 12 metres wide; its ceiling reaches 10 metres at its highest point. Traces of history can also be found there: inscriptions from the 17th century have been preserved in the grotto, which is also associated with the legend of the Rose of Turaida.

At Lēdurga Dendropark, nature meets active exploration. There is a disc golf course with 19 baskets: one practice basket and 18 baskets for the course. Picnics, guided excursions and creative workshops are also available; the availability of specific activities may vary. The botanical collection also has a history of its own: around 1993, 939 taxa of trees and shrubs were recorded. Their number may now exceed 1,000.

Those who prefer to follow a signposted nature trail can take the Mālpils Nature Trail, an approximately 6.5-kilometre round trip along the left bank of the Mergupe. Information boards introduce local trees, plants and fish. Its approximate total length makes the trail easy to plan; conditions may change, so it is worth checking for updates before setting out.

Castles, Art and Culture

The 42-hectare Turaida Museum Reserve includes archaeological, architectural, historical and artistic monuments. They bear witness to events spanning around 1,000 years, beginning in the 11th century. Construction of the stone Turaida Castle began in 1214. The reserve also includes 26 stone sculptures by sculptor Indulis Ranka. Together, the buildings and artworks offer different ways to explore the history of the site.

Two castles in Sigulda itself tell stories from different eras. The Livonian Order Castle was built in 1207 and destroyed in the early 18th century during the Great Northern War. It has been open to visitors since reconstruction work began in 2011 and is used for outdoor events. The New Castle of Sigulda was built in 1878 and retains its Neo-Gothic style on the exterior.

Contemporary culture is also part of the offering: Siguldas devons Cultural Centre is a multifunctional space for culture and art. Its programme includes art exhibitions, theatre performances, concerts, film screenings and family events; dates vary. In Sigulda’s Castle Quarter, visitors can also visit craftsmen’s and artists’ workshops and studios, learn new skills and buy souvenirs.

Experiences for Different Interests

The Sigulda Cable Car crosses the Gauja, connecting its two banks over a distance of 1,025 metres. For a different perspective on movement and technology, there is the Sigulda Bobsleigh and Luge Track, which is open to the public daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. In summer, visitors can ride the summer bobsleigh; in winter, they can try soft bobsleigh, soft luge and ice rafting. Opening hours may change, so it is best to check them before your visit.

A visit to Zilver Winery is offered to groups: by prior arrangement, groups of 10 to 60 people can book a tour of the winemaking process, with an explanation of how the wines are made. It includes a tasting of five fruit, berry or flower wines or wine distillates. The tour and tasting take 1.5 hours in total. This experience adds an insight into local production to the area’s natural and cultural attractions, with a clear time frame and advance booking required.
