Lipuški lies on the southern shore of Lake Rāzna. A nature centre, swimming area, cycling route and Old Believer architectural history offer different perspectives for a visit. The nature centre focuses on the lakes, forests and landscape features of Rāzna National Park; the prayer house of the Lipuški Old Believer community is protected as a regionally significant architectural monument. Nature education, a possible cycling route and architectural history can therefore be considered as different focal points when planning your trip.
Nature takes centre stage
The interactive exhibition “Iepazīsti un sajūti Rāznas Nacionālo parku!” (Discover and experience Rāzna National Park!) introduces the park’s natural features and protected areas, as well as its lakes and forests. Information and photographs complement several activity tables. The nature centre also offers educational programmes about lakes and forests, and about aquatic life. Some of these programmes explore what aquatic plants and animals can tell us about water quality. Other topics introduce landscapes shaped by the Ice Age and the distinctive features of coniferous forests on esker-like landforms. This takes visitors from aquatic habitats to the terrain on which forests grow.
The Sajūtu taka at the nature centre is listed as open seasonally from 1 May to 1 September. As seasonal information may change, check before visiting whether the Sajūtu taka is accessible on your planned date. This will help you distinguish seasonal route planning from the exhibition and educational programme topics described as available year-round.
Swimming area and cycling route
Lipuški has a public swimming area. Check the facilities on site before your visit. The swimming area is a separate point to consider when planning; it should not be assumed to be in a particular location along the shore.
The cycling route “Around the Latgale Sea – Lake Rāzna” is numbered 783. One possible starting and ending point is the car park by the Rāzna Nature Education Centre: Skolas iela 3, Lipuški, Mākoņkalna pagasts, Rēzeknes novads. This is one option, not a required starting point. Confirm your plans before setting off. This lets you adapt your route choice to your own start and end points without assuming a fixed route through the village.
Prayer house and architectural history
The prayer house of the Lipuški Old Believer community was built in 1904 on Lake Rāzna, in the village of Lipuški. It is protected by the state as a regionally significant architectural monument; its protection number is 5830. Notable interior features include a magnificent metal chandelier with enamel and crystal pendants. Inside, the women’s and men’s sections are strictly separated. This brings a striking decorative feature together with a clearly divided interior layout.
The newly built Church of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker in Lipuški is also part of the village’s architectural history. It was consecrated on 18 June 1895. Together with the prayer house built in 1904, it offers a tangible historical point of reference for a trip that explores not only nature, but also Lipuški’s religious architectural history.
