Rēzekne can be explored through several cultural themes: medieval history on the Castle Mound, Latgale ceramics and painting in the museum, and distinctive wooden architecture. When choosing what to focus on, it is worth keeping these themes separate. The Castle Mound reveals historical development over time, the museums introduce ceramics and visual art, and the synagogue and Mākslas nams represent different architectural histories. This lets you place the city’s history in chronological and thematic context, rather than reducing Rēzekne to a single landmark.

History on the Castle Mound

From the 9th to the 12th century, a fortified settlement of the ancient Latgalians stood on Rēzekne’s Castle Mound. At the end of the 13th century, the Livonian Order built Castrum Rositten castle there. This sequence distinguishes two separate historical stages: an early settlement and a later Order castle. Today, medieval castle ruins stand on the Castle Mound; they are considered the city’s oldest historical monument. The monument “United for Latvia” marks a further, different period: it is dedicated to the soldiers of the Latvian freedom struggles of 1920.

Ceramics, art and educational activities

The Latgale Culture and History Museum has collections of Latgale ceramics, visual art and ethnographic objects. It also presents the exhibition “Wonders of clay and fire,” considered the world’s largest collection of Latgale ceramics. Together, these themes show how prominently ceramics feature in the museum’s displays; visual art and ethnography offer further perspectives. The museum offers a wide range of educational programmes for schoolchildren and families with children, from archaeology to art. If you would like to include a programme in your plans, check availability in advance, as the offer may change.

The exhibition “Latgales glezniecība” at Rēzeknes Mākslas nams also introduces art from Latgale. It features works by both older and contemporary artists. The city’s cultural offerings thus present different artistic approaches side by side: the museum’s ceramic and ethnographic collections, and paintings by artists from different generations at Mākslas nams.

Wooden architecture and city views

The Green Synagogue is the city’s oldest wooden building, dating from 1845. It is also the only one of eleven synagogues to have survived. Rēzeknes Mākslas nams is also a wooden building, but from a later period: the single-storey house was built in the last quarter of the 19th century as a summer house for the merchant Vorobjov family. The comparison shows two different architectural histories, from the mid-19th-century synagogue to the later summer house.

The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is neo-Gothic and has two towers. The terrace of the Zeimuļs tower offers a different view of the city: from there, the panoramic vista stretches across the historic city centre. While individual buildings reflect different periods and functions, the terrace offers a view of the historic urban area as a whole.

Guided tours, concert hall and local cuisine

The Embassy of Latgale GORS is an acoustic concert hall. For guided explorations, the Rēzekne Tourism Development Center organises excursions and develops individual routes. Guided tours are available for groups and individuals in Latvian, Latgalian, Russian and English. As visitor services may change, check which options and languages are currently available before making specific plans.

The local cuisine offers another point of interest: cafés in Rēzekne have developed special dishes featuring pearl barley and added them to their menus. If you are interested in this local ingredient, bear in mind that menus may change. Rēzekne therefore offers a range of cultural themes to consider when planning your trip: history on the Castle Mound, ceramics and art in the museums, wooden architecture, guided tours and dishes featuring pearl barley.
