In Naryn Region, Silk Road heritage and alpine nature go hand in hand: Tash-Rabat tells the story of caravan routes, while lakes, protected areas, valleys, and passes offer a variety of landscapes. When choosing where to go, it is worth first considering whether cultural history, activities on lakes, or hikes and views should be the focus.

Silk Road Heritage and Lakes

The Tash-Rabat caravanserai was built during the Karakhanid period in the 11th to 12th centuries AD. It served routes to Kashgar via the Tash-Rabat and Torugart passes; the structure is made of slate slabs. The site is therefore notable both for its role along the routes and for its construction.

The lakes offer other options for planning your trip. Kel Suu Lake has turquoise, pristine water and is surrounded by high cliffs; the lake is suitable for trekking and camping. Kol Tor Lake is an alpine lake in the Tian Shan Mountains and is suitable for hiking and picnicking. The distinction is clear: trekking and camping are the focus at Kel Suu, while hiking and picnicking are the focus at Kol Tor.

Protected Areas and Landscapes

Chatyr Kul is a state nature reserve in Naryn Oblast. The Karatal-Zhapyryk State Reserve is divided into three zones: forest and the mountain lakes Son-Kul and Chatyr-Kul. Thus, the reserve focuses on distinct areas comprising forest and two mountain lakes.

Other places offer their own distinctive landscapes: Salkyn Tor National Park features lush forests, while the Eki-Naryn Valley is characterized by meadows, pastures, and pine forests. Naryn State Reserve lies in the eastern part of the province; it is home to 1,870 plant species and 50 animal species. These figures show that plant life is another distinct aspect of the region’s natural attractions.

Teshik Geopark and Nature Area features unique rock formations, gently rolling meadows, and a diverse range of flora and fauna. Scenic hikes are possible there near the village of Kara Unkur in Naryn Rayon. In the Kor Bulak Canyons, visitors can explore winding trails and discover hidden viewpoints. The natural experiences therefore differ not only in terms of lakes and forests, but also rock landscapes and trails.

Passes, Lakes, and Guided Tours

Moldo Ashuu Pass is a high-altitude mountain pass on the way to Son Kul Lake. It offers panoramic views of the Tian Shan Mountains and the valleys below. The Saman Kol Lakes Area comprises five alpine lakes and is located in Ak-Talaa Rayon. This gives you a choice between a pass with mountain and valley views and an area with several alpine lakes.

Visit Naryn offers guided day tours in the Naryn region. The tours go to local historical sites, panoramic viewpoints, national parks, or nature destinations. Since tour details may change, check the current itinerary before choosing a tour.
