Sulaiman-Too shapes the landscape of Osh: the sacred mountain dominates the Fergana Valley and forms the backdrop to the city. Important Central Asian Silk Road routes crossed here. Sulaiman-Too has been revered as a sacred mountain for more than 1,500 years—a place where the landscape meets a long religious history.

Sulaiman-Too and the History of Osh

Five peaks and their slopes encompass ancient places of worship, caves with petroglyphs, and two largely reconstructed 16th-century mosques. A total of 101 petroglyph sites have been recorded. Footpaths connect the peaks; 17 places of worship are still in use. For visitors, the special appeal lies in encountering rock art, religious sites, and historic buildings in a mountain setting that is still considered sacred today.

A museum in the mountain’s cave complex presents religious beliefs that existed in southern Kyrgyzstan over a period of more than 3,000 years, including pre-Islamic Kyrgyz beliefs. The Sulaiman-Too National Historical-Archaeological Museum Complex in Osh complements this perspective with exhibits on the geology and geography of the south, its flora and fauna, history, and ethnography. Historical and cultural artifacts are also preserved there. On the southern edge of Osh, parts of a fortification have survived at an ancient pre-Arab settlement: the walls and towers date from between the 3rd century BCE and the 8th century CE.

Silk Road Traces in Uzgen

Uzgen was a connection point on the Silk Road, where intensive political, economic, trade, and cultural contacts developed from antiquity through the Middle Ages and into modern times. The architectural complex consists of three baked-brick mausoleums and a minaret. The oldest mausoleum dates from the turn of the 11th to the 12th century. Terracotta and carved stucco decorate the facades.

Where permitted, visitors can climb the minaret and look out over the Fergana Valley; confirm locally whether access is allowed. You can plan a half- to full-day trip to Uzgen from Osh. Shared taxis and marshrutkas run between the two places in the morning; the journey takes approximately one to one and a half hours. Frequency and schedules can change, so it is worth checking the connection before departure.

Mountain Passes and High-Altitude Experiences

The main road from Osh to Alay District passes over Taldyk Pass. It reaches 3,615 meters and is known for its views. Road conditions can vary; check them before setting out. Chyiyrchyk Pass lies 40 kilometers south of Osh at the entrance to Alay District. The two descriptions of the passes provide different points of reference: one describes the main road into the district, while the other gives a location south of the city.

The Sary-Mogol Valley is considered a destination for mountaineering and trekking. Community-based tourism in Sary-Mogol includes visits to high-altitude jailoo summer pastures, yak rides, kumys tastings, and mountain lakes in the Peak Lenin area. Folklore performances and national horse games can also be arranged for a group. Peak Lenin is considered Kyrgyzstan’s best-known 7,000-meter peak; climbers attempt to ascend it every year.

For a longer trip, there is a seven-day trekking route from Osh: it runs via the village of Sarymogol, Jitpick Pass, the village of Kojokelen, Sarybell Pass, the Koshmoinok Valley, the Sarymogol Valley, and Sarymogl Pass. Check seasonal details before traveling. This multi-day route is clearly different from spending half a day or a full day visiting the cultural sites of Uzgen.

Food and Crafts

At Osh Central Bazaar, Eastern dishes and aromatic spices sit alongside delicacies and seasonal fruit; embroidery, felt carpets, and other handicrafts are also on offer. A distinctive local tradition combines crafts with agriculture: in Aravan, white figs are grown across generations as part of a family tradition and harvested by hand. The different places in Osh Region thus express their character not only through sacred sites and mountain landscapes, but also through the produce and goods that play a role there.
