Song-Kul lies in the southwest of Kochkor District, which is also crossed by the Bishkek–Naryn–Torugart international highway. Kochkor serves as a hub for community-based tourism: independent travelers can arrange jeeps, horses, and yurt stays there for Song-Kul. To get your bearings, it is helpful to consider the district as a landscape and the town of Kochkor as the center for organizing your trip separately.

Song-Kul and Other Tours

A CBT program to Song-Kul follows the Jalgyz-Karagai Pass and includes an overnight stay in a yurt with a Kyrgyz shepherd family in Batai-Aral. A CBT horseback riding program runs from Kochkor to Kyzart Pass, where the tour begins. The CBT program to Lake Kol-Ukok starts with a drive from Kochkor to Isakeev, followed by a walk to Ters-Tor Jailoo and then on to the lake. The options therefore include a Song-Kul program with a pass route and a yurt stay, a horseback riding tour starting at Kyzart Pass, and a Kol-Ukok itinerary combining a drive and a walk.

Kochkor: Pilgrimage Site, Felt Crafts, and Market

Kochkor-Ata is a sacred mountain in the village of Kochkor. Pilgrims come from several regions of Kyrgyzstan and from Kazakhstan. Women’s cooperatives in Kochkor make shyrdaks and Ala-Kiiz felt rugs; travelers can watch them being made and buy pieces. In the workshops, you can see how wool is dyed with natural pigments and how patterns are transferred from memory onto large pieces of felt.

A livestock market is held on Sundays on the edge of Kochkor, where horses and sheep are among the animals traded. The market, pilgrimage site, and felt workshops offer different insights into life and craft traditions in the village.

Archaeology and History

Tört-Kül is located in Kum-Döbö, at the site of the ancient city of Kochkor-Bashy. Archaeological work on the settlement mound at Kum-Döbö also uncovered the remains of a Muslim bathhouse, a hammam, in 2024.

In the wider travel destination of Naryn Region, Tash-Rabat offers a separate historical connection: the structure was built during the Karakhanid period, in the 11th to 12th centuries AD, and served as a caravanserai on routes to Kashgar via the Tash-Rabat and Torugart passes.

Nearby Landscapes

Beyond the village of Kochkor, by the Chu River and within the destination’s immediate vicinity, lies the Orto-Tokoy Reservoir. Its waters are considered expansive and calm, and gray-brown mountains surround the reservoir. Thus, the nearby area features a reservoir landscape alongside the mountain-lake and pass routes of the tours.

Accommodation and Travel Planning

For homestays, yurt camps, and village tours in Kochkor, it is best to arrange them through regional official CBT offices or local destination management organizations. Homestays typically include dinner with beshbarmak or lagman—a practical point of reference if you are considering this type of accommodation.
