The Ishim divides Astana into a left and a right bank. This contrast offers two perspectives on the city: the left bank is known for futuristic buildings, broad avenues and unusual entertainment options. The right bank is considered the old-town area, with numerous historic buildings and landmarks from the 19th century.

Two Banks, Different Cityscapes

The riverbanks provide a way to orient yourself among Astana’s diverse facets, without reducing the city to a single era. Modern architecture and historic buildings form distinct sides of the cityscape. Parks, promenades and cultural venues are also among the places to explore alongside these impressions.

Experience Architecture and Culture

The Baiterek Monument means “Tree of Life” and reflects the worldview of the ancient nomads. The Mäñgilik El Triumphal Arch commemorates a later chapter in history: it was built in 2011 to mark the 20th anniversary of Kazakhstan’s independence. Its walls feature bas-reliefs depicting important moments in the history of Kazakhstan. Its name, dedication and reliefs each give the structure a distinct cultural significance.

The Palace of Peace and Reconciliation has a different architectural form: it is a pyramid symbolizing the unity of different religions, ethnic groups and cultures, as well as the openness of the people and the state to the world. The history and culture of the country are at the heart of the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan. It is the country’s largest museum and presents this broad span of time, from antiquity to the present day.

The Astana Art Museum displays works by Kazakh artists, sculptors and craftspeople, as well as works by the masters of world painting. Local artistic works are thus shown alongside classical world painting. The performing arts also have a prominent place in the city’s cultural life: Astana Opera is a center for performing arts and dance in Kazakhstan. The State Opera and Ballet Theatre opened in 2013 on the initiative of Nursultan Nazarbayev, the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Astana Opera is considered the largest theatre in Central Asia; the building combines classical traditions of world architecture with distinctly Kazakh design elements, and its technical facilities meet international standards.

Green Spaces and Paths by the Water

The Astana Botanical Garden offers nature experiences and relaxation among flowers, ornamental trees and rare plants. In the Central Park, walking, cycling and running paths, children’s playgrounds, relaxation areas and cafés add to the city’s open spaces. Concerts, festivals and sporting events take place there in summer. For those who want to include seasonal events alongside paths and places to relax, the park offers another dimension to explore.

The Presidential Park has walking and cycling paths, fountains and relaxation areas. It also has sports courts and outdoor exercise equipment. Both parks bring together paths and places to linger, but their specifically mentioned amenities differ: the Central Park has cafés and playgrounds, while the Presidential Park has sports courts and exercise equipment.

The riverside promenade is also a popular place to relax. Its features include river views, street musicians, artists and children’s attractions.

Boulevard and City Life

The Vodno-Zeleny Boulevard, now called Nurzhol Boulevard, leads to the Khan Shatyr shopping and entertainment center. The center combines shopping and dining options with a children’s play center and a swimming pool beneath its dome. Alongside museums, theatre and parks, visitors to Astana can also enjoy an offering that brings together shopping, dining and entertainment.

The places described offer different points of interest: Baiterek and the Triumphal Arch evoke cultural interpretations and history; the museum and opera provide a home for art and performing arts; parks and the promenade bring paths, recreation and events into focus. Together, they offer several ways to get to know Astana, without any single attraction explaining the entire cityscape on its own.
