Berel offers a tangible way to explore the archaeological traces of East Kazakhstan. An open-air museum has been established at the Berel burial mounds; the Berel burial site comprises more than 100 burials, as well as funerary and memorial structures. The Berel State Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve is a center for cultural education, science and tourism.

Archaeological Sites and Literary Memory

The Ak-Baur complex offers a different archaeological focus: it includes numerous petroglyphs, megaliths and burial mounds dating from the Bronze Age and the Saka period. While burials and memorial structures stand out at Berel, Ak-Baur features rock art and megaliths alongside burial mounds. The comparison highlights the different forms of archaeological evidence you can discover in East Kazakhstan.

The Oralkhan Bokei House Museum in Chingistai, the writer’s native village where he was born and spent his childhood, offers another kind of cultural remembrance. The museum displays personal belongings, manuscripts, photographs and books. In this way, the focus shifts from archaeological sites to literary materials and a writer’s life story.

Altai Landscapes and Nature Conservation

Mount Belukha attracts climbers, tourists and mountain trekking enthusiasts. Lake Yazevoye is also popular with tourists, climbers and trekking enthusiasts. At the same time, it is a high-altitude freshwater lake of glacial origin. Both places appeal to people interested in mountain landscapes: one is a mountain, the other a lake of glacial origin.

Kokkol Waterfall is about 80 meters high and is located near tourist routes to Mount Belukha. The West Altai Nature Reserve offers a different perspective on nature. It is located near Ridder and was established to protect the Altai’s mountain taiga ecosystems. Cedar, fir and spruce forests grow there; rare plant and animal species listed in the Red Book are also found there.

Katon-Karagay National Park also showcases the diversity of plant life: more than 1,000 species of vascular plants grow there, including 30 species listed in Kazakhstan’s Red Book. The figures are preliminary. Together with the forests and rare species of the West Altai Nature Reserve, this offers another perspective on the region’s natural environment: from protecting mountain taiga to the diversity of plants in the national park.

Routes and More Travel Ideas

The Old Austrian Road is useful for finding your way to Lake Markakol. It is about 60 kilometers long and reaches the lake from Katon-Karagay or Kurchum. Check road conditions before setting out. The “Literary East” tourist route passes through sacred sites in East Kazakhstan; as its operation may change, it is advisable to check the latest information about whether it is running before planning your trip.

Those interested in a wellness-focused stay can visit the mountain resort of Rakhmanovskie Klyuchi, known for its healing thermal springs. You can prioritize the different themes according to your interests: archaeological sites and literature sit alongside mountain landscapes, nature conservation and route planning.
