In Karaganda, the landscape ranges from vast steppes and granite formations to archaeological sites and cultural attractions. The Bugyly mountain oasis in Shet District showcases this rich landscape within a compact area: it includes granite mountains, picturesque gorges, clear springs, vast steppes and ancient historical monuments. Those interested in the area can explore nature and history as two intertwined themes, without needing to follow a single set route.

Granite Landscapes and Steppe Regions

Buiratau National Park also offers a way to experience the region’s landscape. Located in Osakarovsky District, it lies in the transition zone between the moderately arid and arid steppe subzones. The part of the park within the Qaraghandy Region includes a 400-hectare reserve that is home to deer and bison.

Another natural highlight is the Kyzylarai Mountains. At 1,565 metres, Aksoran Peak is the highest point in the Kyzylarai mountain range and the Kazakh Uplands of Saryarka. The ascent from the Torkora tract to the summit is listed as approximately 3.4 kilometres long, with an elevation gain of around 560 to 600 metres.

Archaeology and History Across Several Periods

In the Taldy River valley in Shet District lies the Karazharthas burial site, a unique archaeological monument from the Late Bronze Age, dating from the 13th to the 9th century BC. The complex is part of Taldy Historical and Archaeological Park. The Begazy-Dandybay mausoleums are also located in Shet District: megalithic burial structures from the Late Bronze Age, dated to the 12th to the 8th century BC. The date ranges overlap, but place different emphasis on the chronology. At Karazharthas, the focus is on a single burial site; at Begazy-Dandybay, the mausoleums’ architectural form shapes the description.

In Karkaraly, the Museum of History and Local Lore presents the region’s history, Saryarka’s natural heritage, archaeological monuments and the cultures of the peoples who live there. It is housed in a historic 19th-century building. This brings together the story of the area and the building in which the museum is located.

Another way to explore 19th-century history can be found in Karkaralinsk. The house of the merchant Khalulla Bekmetyev was built in the second half of the century and is considered a notable example of merchant wooden architecture; it is also part of the Qaraghandy Region’s historical and cultural heritage. The Kunanbay-Kazhy Mosque in Karkaralinsk is a 19th-century architectural monument of local significance and a historical, cultural and sacred site. It is associated with Kunanbay Uskenbayev, the father of Abai Kunanbayev. The house and mosque thus offer different perspectives: the heritage of merchant wooden architecture on the one hand, and religious and biographical connections on the other.

The ranger’s house in Karkaraly State National Park also brings together architectural history and landscape. This historic wooden monument was built in 1910 and is located in the Komissarowka area on the shore of Lake Kim-Asar, also known as Komissarovskoye. It is one of the national park’s official tourist destinations.

Culture and Recreation in Karaganda

In Karaganda itself, Central Park of Culture and Recreation and the Karaganda Regional EcoMuseum offer two different experiences. The park features tree-lined avenues, a picturesque lake, modern amusement rides, a beach and sports facilities. The EcoMuseum is Kazakhstan’s first specialised environmental museum; its address is 47 Bukhar-Zhyrau Avenue. Together, these places show how varied the interests pursued during a stay in Karaganda can be, from recreational activities in the park to environmental topics at the museum.

When deciding what you would like to explore further in the region, consider how the places and themes differ: landscapes and wildlife in Buiratau National Park, the elevation profile and summit setting around Aksoran, and archaeology and architectural history at the cultural sites mentioned above.
