Nearby Nes Harim, you’ll find activities focused on sensory perception, orienteering and hiking. The KKL-JNF Nes Harim Field and Forest Center offers a sensory trail and a mobile orienteering game; there is also a short walking loop and a section of the Israel National Trail. When planning, it’s worth distinguishing between these options: the activities at the center have different focuses, while the two routes take different forms—a loop and a trail section.

Experiences at the Field and Forest Center

The sensory trail comprises five activities that engage different senses. In the mobile orienteering game, groups compete with one another, explore the area and learn about it. It does not take place on Saturdays, so choose another day of the week if you plan to take part. The practical distinction is clear: the trail focuses on different senses, while the game focuses on orienteering in the area and group competition.

Campsite and nearby trails

The Nes Harim campsite is also nearby. It has numerous picnic tables, an accessible play area, a combined basketball and soccer court, barbecue grills, a metal lookout tower and an overnight camping area. Its facilities combine options for picnicking, play and sports with the opportunity to camp overnight. As facilities may change, check the current conditions with KKL-JNF before your visit.

A short loop leads from the Nes Harim day and overnight campsite to a small spring, orchard trees and a viewpoint at an old fortified structure. Another hiking option is the Israel National Trail section from Bar Giora to the Elah Junction, which begins at Nes Harim Junction, north of the moshav of Bar Giora. The two routes differ in form: the loop leads to several specific sights, while the trail section has Nes Harim Junction as its starting point and Elah Junction as its destination. Check current trail advisories before setting out on either hike.

Jerusalem as a distinct cultural context

Jerusalem offers a distinct cultural context. The Old City of Jerusalem and its walls hold great symbolic significance as a holy city for Judaism, Christianity and Islam, and include 220 historical monuments. The Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem’s Old City was built in the 7th century.

The Jerusalem Walls National Park is located in central Jerusalem and includes historical, archaeological and religious sites. It was designated to preserve historical, archaeological, traditional, architectural and scenic values for the benefit of the public. Another Jerusalem highlight is the Jerusalem Botanical Gardens, with 150 dunams of nature in the heart of the city.

Jerusalem’s museums also offer different perspectives. The permanent exhibition at the Tower of David Jerusalem Museum spans ten galleries and combines innovative technology, interactive displays, archaeological finds and ancient artifacts. The Bible Lands Museum Jerusalem presents rare artifacts from the ancient Near East.
