Kadarim and local accommodation

Kadarim is located on a hill at the foot of Mount Hazon. The rural Qaddarim guesthouse offers rooms with a view.

A gas station operated by Alon also has a café. The guesthouse and café serve different purposes when planning a trip: the guesthouse is relevant for overnight stays, while the café may be of interest as a possible stop. Check the café’s current opening hours before planning a visit.

Archaeological highlights in the wider destination of the Northern District

In the wider destination of the Northern District, archaeological themes range from Bronze Age palaces and temples to Iron Age urban planning. Tel Hazor and Tel Megiddo offer different highlights.

Tel Hazor: Upper City, gate, and water engineering

Tel Hazor is a biblical tell with significant remains of a city associated with the Bible, and is one of three tells that preserve such remains and are closely connected with events in the Bible. A visit to Tel Hazor focuses on the Upper City. Tel Hazor also includes Solomon’s Gate, a gate with six chambers and two towers dating to the 10th century BCE.

A Canaanite palace at Tel Hazor was used by the kings of Hazor in the 14th and 13th centuries BCE. The Late Bronze Age palace is considered the most elaborate in Israel and one of the most significant in the Levant. Tel Hazor’s fortifications are also noteworthy: they are considered the finest example of their kind in the area stretching from southern Turkey to the northern Negev.

Tel Hazor preserves significant remains of an underground water collection system, an ingenious feat of engineering adapted to the geography and designed to store water. The excavated shaft is 45 meters deep. Steps three meters wide are carved into the walls of the vertical shaft. Tel Hazor thus brings together several aspects: the design of the Upper City, its fortifications, and the technical challenge of water storage.

Tel Hazor National Park can be reached from the north and south via Route 90 in the direction of Ayelet Hashahar. Check your navigation before setting out.

Tel Megiddo: temple complex and city plan

Tel Megiddo is also a biblical tell with significant remains of a city associated with the Bible. It is one of the three tells closely connected with events in the Bible. The Early Bronze Age temple complex offers a different historical focus. Its number of temples, continuity of cult activity, and documented ritual activities are exceptional.

Tel Megiddo’s orthogonal city plan from the Iron Age has been preserved; it has few parallels in the Levant. For a thematic comparison, Tel Megiddo’s Early Bronze Age temple complex and Tel Hazor’s palace history represent different periods and archaeological questions.
