The Colony's History Over Time
Ra'anana's early history is brought into focus through several clearly dated milestones: the Ahuza A' Society was founded in 1912, settlement followed in 1922, and in 1936 the settlement was recognized as an independent colony. The Chamber of the Founders Museum documents this development. This sequence distinguishes the founding, settlement, and political status rather than combining them into a single founding moment.
The museum opened in 1989 at Beit Yad Labanim. Its historical focus thus extends beyond the early milestones to the establishment of a place that preserves the settlement's history. Visits are by prior arrangement. If you plan to include the museum in your itinerary, make these arrangements in good time.
Museums, Literature, and Public Places
Materials relating to the literary legacy and songs of poet Natan Yonatan are on public display in his original room at Beit Yad Labanim. This room adds a literary focus to the story of the settlement's founding. Check current access arrangements before visiting.
Another historical landmark is Beit Ha'am. The building was completed in 1927 and soon became the colony's cultural, public, and social center. Together with the museum, it offers a view of two distinct aspects of the area's history: the documented development of the settlement and the role a public building played at the time.
Reservoir and Signal Tower
Ra'anana's first reservoir for storing well water was built in 1924. The signal tower above this first reservoir was built during the unrest of 1936 to 1939. These dates link two stages of construction: the reservoir dates from the settlement's early development, while the tower dates from a later, turbulent period. This makes it possible to explore the area's history not only through founding dates, but also through its buildings and their chronology.
Tours and Visit Planning
The Ra'anana City Archive organizes walking and vehicle tours together with the Agricultural Museum. This provides two distinct ways to explore the city's history. Check in advance which dates are available and how booking is arranged. The mode of transport is a practical first point of comparison when choosing between the formats.
For a culturally focused stay, Ra'anana offers several historical perspectives: development from the founding of the society to recognition as a colony; a museum documenting the settlement's history; literature and songs in Natan Yonatan's original room; and buildings from different periods. Beit Ha'am also illustrates the former public and social role of a building. If you plan to visit these sites, allow time to arrange your museum visit and check the current tour dates.
