West Papua is especially diverse where marine nature, historic sites and traditions come together. On Pulau Mansinam is the Mansinam Museum, also called the Pekabaran Injil Museum; it is considered the first thematic museum in Papua Barat. Other discoveries lead to coral reefs, coastal waterfalls and archaeological traces. These themes offer different perspectives on the province and give you several starting points for planning your own trip.

Marine Nature in Different Settings

The marine area of Teluk Cenderawasih National Park covers about 1,385,300 hectares, including 80,000 hectares of coral reef ecosystems. The national park is located in Kabupaten Teluk Wondama in Papua Barat. Biodiversity also draws attention to different places: there are about 200 coral species in the Gulf of Cenderawasih; the waters of Kaimana are home to around 937 fish species and 492 coral species. These figures refer to the marine area of the national park, the gulf and the waters of Kaimana. If you want to focus on marine nature, these place references can guide your choice of destinations.

Air Terjun Kiti Kiti offers a different coastal highlight: the waterfall flows directly into the sea. West Papua’s natural scenery therefore includes not only corals and marine habitats, but also a striking meeting of waterfall and coast.

Boat Journeys as Part of Your Planning

For some destinations, the boat is part of the journey. Teluk Toran is in the Karas District at the foot of Gunung Bay and can only be reached from the city center by speedboat or longboat. Travel time and availability may vary. The speedboat trip from Fakfak Harbor to Air Terjun Kiti Kiti takes about four hours; the actual duration may depend on sea conditions.

For the trip from Ketapang Pier to Pulau Mansinam, information from August 2024 gives a journey time of about 10 to 15 minutes by water taxi; a speedboat can also be rented as an alternative. This time may change, so check current travel options and journey times before your trip. The time ranges given apply to different routes and starting points. Together with the modes of transport listed for each, they can help you estimate the time needed to reach each destination.

Historical Traces and the Story of Namatota

The Kokas archaeological site, also known as Tapurarang, is a historic place in Kabupaten Fakfak. Red handprints on sea cliffs and in caves are estimated to be several thousand years old. The site brings together coastal scenery and archaeological history, with a kind of discovery that differs from the focus of a museum.

Desa Namatota is a tourist village in Kabupaten Kaimana, Papua Barat, located in the Taman Wisata Perairan, Area III. It was designated as one of Kabupaten Kaimana’s tourist villages in 2021 by Bupati Decree No. 430/82/VII/Tahun 2021. The village is also the center of the Kingdom of Namatota, which dates back to around the 16th century and is still recognized. Diving is among the activities listed for Desa Wisata Namatota. In Namatota, the designation of a tourist village, a maritime area and a long historical association come together.

Traditions Between the Sea and the Community

In the waters of Kaimana, Sasi Nggama offers insight into a tradition of using marine resources. It regulates their use through open and closed seasons; the specific rules may differ from village to village. The alternation between open and closed periods is part of the system described. Those interested in how marine resources are managed will find a different way to explore the subject of the sea here than through coral species or landscapes.

The annual Roon Wondama Festival is organized by the government of Kabupaten Teluk Wondama. It brings together local traditions and the local knowledge of the people of Roon Island with marine tourism. Among other things, the festival features Bemamun Soren, described as a traditional sea battle. The festival also includes exhibitions by local small businesses, featuring traditional foods and handicrafts typical of Papua Barat. The program may vary from one edition to another.

Birdwatching in the Pegunungan Arfak

Birdwatching offers another way to experience nature: Kampung Kwau is one of the region’s well-known birdwatching spots in the Pegunungan Arfak. In the Mokwam region, you can see birds including the Western Parotia, Belah Rotan and the Vogelkop Bowerbird. These species are associated with the Mokwam area; Kampung Kwau is known as a birdwatching destination. The discoveries described here therefore differ not only by subject, but also by the specific places mentioned.
