The morning bustle of Pasar Wamanggu, a central monument and Lampu Satu Beach give Merauke a range of points of interest. The city also serves as a starting point for hikers heading to Wasur National Park. This brings together the city’s history, local cuisine and destinations at varying distances.

Memorial Sites and Cityscape

At the center of the city stands Tugu Pepera, erected on September 17, 1969. It commemorates the incorporation of Irian Barat (now Papua) into Indonesia. The exact date connects the memorial to a specific historical event.

Merauke’s character is also shaped by old cemeteries and numerous historic churches. These offer a broader picture of the city’s history, while Tugu Pepera marks a specific occasion for remembrance.

A monument in central Merauke holds a capsule containing seven wishes for the future from children in 34 Indonesian provinces. The wishes were collected in 2015; the capsule is due to be opened in 2085. Alongside remembrance, this monument therefore centers on a date explicitly set in the future.

Beach and Hiking Destination

Lampu Satu Beach is about four kilometers from central Merauke. A picturesque lighthouse and its beams of light at sunset define the beach’s scenery.

Merauke serves as a starting point for hikers traveling to Wasur National Park, which is about 60 kilometers away. Wasur is therefore significantly farther away than Lampu Satu. The different distances help distinguish the beach and hiking destination as separate focuses for excursions.

Market and Regional Cuisine

Every morning, sellers from surrounding villages bring garden produce, fresh fish and traditional products to Pasar Wamanggu. The specific products on offer may vary.

Sate rusa is considered one of Merauke’s culinary landmarks. Dendeng rusa is a typical specialty and souvenir: thinly sliced Timor deer meat is marinated overnight and then dried until semi-dry. While sate rusa is notable for its special place in the local cuisine, dendeng rusa can also be described by its specific preparation.

Papeda is cooked from sago starch until it develops a thick, sticky consistency and is usually served with yellow fish soup seasoned with turmeric. Papeda is readily available at street restaurants in Merauke; which particular establishment serves it may change.

The cuisine of the Merauke region also includes sagu sep, a traditional Marind dish made with sago and young coconut. It can be prepared with either meat or fish. The bakar-batu technique uses heat and steam for cooking. Unlike papeda, whose description combines sago starch and fish soup, sagu sep highlights the choice of ingredients and cooking technique.
