Kaimana combines a stay in town with independent destinations nearby. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between activities in town and boat trips: Teluk Triton and Desa Namatota are destinations outside town, each with its own focus. Utarom Airport is located in Kampung Trikora, Distrik Kaimana, Kabupaten Kaimana.
Boat routes and travel times
From the harbour in Kaimana, you can reach nearby Desa Namatota by speedboat in about 60 minutes. A speedboat charter from Pelabuhan Kota Kaimana to Teluk Triton was quoted at around one hour. The similar journey times offer an initial comparison, but Namatota and the bay are distinct destinations, each with its own focus. The quoted price for a charter to Teluk Triton was around 5–6 million rupiah per boat. Check the current price before planning this trip.
Teluk Triton: Coral Islands and Rock Art
Nearby Teluk Triton lies outside the town of Kaimana. Groups of coral islands, clear water and coral formations define the bay; the waters of Erana are a habitat for whale sharks. Prehistoric rock paintings can be seen on the cliffs of Maimai. The area is considered suitable for snorkelling and exploring. Teluk Triton thus offers both marine and coral scenery and rock art.
Whale sharks (Rhincodon typus), also known as Fir’umbo in Papua, are frequently found in the waters of Teluk Triton and are considered a visitor attraction in Kabupaten Kaimana. As they are wild animals, sightings are not guaranteed.
Desa Namatota: Handicrafts and History
Nearby Desa Namatota combines village attractions with a distinctive handicraft tradition. Women artisans handcraft Tomang from coastal pandan leaves, locally called Ram. Visitor attractions include diving, culture, history, sunsets and village tours. Unlike Teluk Triton, the focus here is on the village and its cultural offerings rather than the bay landscape.
Desa Namatota is also the centre of the Kingdom of Namatota in Kabupaten Kaimana. It has existed since around the 16th century and continues to be recognised. Its approximate dating and continued recognition give the village a distinct historical connection to the wider region.
Viewpoint and festival in Kaimana
The Bukit 7ujuh Senja viewpoint is provided by the Kaimana regional government through its Department of Culture and Tourism and offers elevated views of Kaimana. It is located on the road to Kolam Sisir, around 150 metres from the roadside; access is considered easy. So, in addition to the boat destinations, the itinerary can include a specific viewpoint in town.
The 2024 and 2025 editions of the Pesona Senja Kaimana Festival at Taman Kota Kaimana featured cultural performances, creative dances, presentations of traditional Papuan clothing and entertainment for the public. If you are planning your trip around a festival, check the event dates in advance.
