West Java’s geology is especially striking at the Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu UNESCO Global Geopark. It lies on the island of Java in western Sukabumi Regency, along a tectonically active subduction zone between the Eurasian and Indo-Australian plates. The plates continue to converge at 4 mm per year—a precise geological measurement that draws attention to the movement of Earth’s plates.
The geopark brings together waterfalls, beaches, geysers, rivers and mountains, as well as a wildlife reserve and turtle conservation area. Kasepuhan traditions, including rice cultivation known as “tatanen,” are still practiced in several cultural village communities. Nature and living tradition meet in the same landscape.
Adventure activities on offer include surfing, paragliding, rafting, canoeing, waterfall climbing, snorkeling, diving, fishing and forest trekking. The range spans activities on and in the water, as well as exploring waterfalls and forests. Check individual operators and local conditions before setting out.
Volcanoes and river landscapes
Active volcano Gunung Tangkuban Perahu, near Bandung, offers views of its craters. Kawah Putih offers a different scene: this volcanic lake has turquoise water and is surrounded by mist. The crater lake lies on Mount Patuha at an elevation of 2,386 meters. The crater views and high-altitude volcanic lake showcase different aspects of West Java’s volcanic landscape.
Ciwidey is known for its cool climate, strawberry plantations and panoramic landscape crossed by a river. The Ciwidey River is 20 km long and has a strong current, numerous large boulders and waterfalls. It is a destination for riverboarding. The dry season is recommended for rafting or riverboarding on the Ciwidey River; check the local weather and river conditions before taking part.
At Green Canyon, exploring the river and rock formations go hand in hand: wooden boats called “Ketinting” are available for river trips. Above twin cliffs on either bank of the river is a three-meter-wide natural rock bridge. If you’re planning a boat trip, check locally to see whether it is currently operating.
Coast, culture and local experiences
In Bandung, Saung Angklung Udjo preserves traditional Sundanese arts and culture. On the southern coast, Pangandaran is located on a peninsula. A forested hill beside Pangandaran Beach is home to monkeys, deer, buffalo and other exotic animals; at its summit, a waterfall plunges directly into the sea.
The waves at Pananjung Beach are calm, making it suitable for family activities and safe swimming. Check local sea conditions before swimming. Pangandaran’s fresh fish market offers a very different way to experience the coast: visitors can buy seafood and have it grilled or fried to their liking. Individual vendors may change.
You can also explore Pangandaran by bicycle. Rental shops offer regular bikes, BMX bikes and tandems for two or three people. Check availability locally. The different types of bicycles show that the selection is not limited to just one style; which type is right for you depends on whether you want to ride alone, with one other person or with two others.
A focus for your trip
You can start by deciding whether a river landscape or a volcanic lake should be the main highlight of your visit.
