Vogar is located on Vogavík in Stakksfjörður. Several specific themes come together here when planning a trip: the seaweed-covered coastal rocks, Vogatjörn in the built-up area and a monument commemorating fishermen from the surrounding area. If you are looking for accommodation, you can choose Vogar as your destination and shape your stay around the landscape, walks or local history. The coast, pond and artwork offer different perspectives on the place; you can tailor your trip to your interests.
Coast and Vogatjörn
On the coast of Vogar, the seaweed-covered rocks are part of the Þráinsskjöldur lava field, which formed about 10,000 years ago. This approximate age gives the rocks a geological timescale. Vogatjörn is in the heart of the built-up area, right by the sea and harbour. The pond is a little over two hectares in size; the island in it covers about half a hectare. This means the island is roughly a quarter of the pond’s area. Here you can see two different connections to the place: the rocks as part of the lava field and the pond in the middle of the built-up area by the harbour.
Walks and nature watching
Visitors can watch birds at Vogatjörn pond; in Vogar, you can also walk along the sea. These activities offer different ways to enjoy the water: birdwatching is the focus at the pond, while the walk takes you along the sea. Nearby is Háibjalli, a grove sheltered by rocks above Reykjanesbraut, about a 20-minute walk from Vogar. The grove adds another landscape feature to the water and coast. As a nearby destination, it is distinct from the activities mentioned in Vogar itself, and the approximate walking time gives you a practical guide for planning.
Art and remembrance
The artwork “Íslands Hrafnistumenn” is by Erlingur Jónsson and was unveiled on the grounds of Stóra-Vogar in 2008. The monument commemorates fishermen from the surrounding area. The artist, year and location identify the work specifically; its dedication adds a cultural connection in Vogar to the landscape and nature themes.
