Coastal paths, maritime collections and a visitor centre dedicated to the volcanic landscape offer different ways to explore Reykjanesbær. There are also churches with their own histories, a music museum and the annual town festival, Ljósanótt. You can plan your stay around your own interests—from walks and local history to cultural events.
Coast and Geopark
Reykjanesbær is located in a volcanic area certified by UNESCO as a Global Geopark. The visitor centre for Reykjanes Global UNESCO Geopark is in the Duus Museum. It explores local geology and natural erosion, bringing the city's landscape into focus.
A 10-kilometre path starts behind the Duus Museum and runs along the coastal area, offering a route for walking, running and cycling. Several information signs along a coastal path in Reykjanesbær also provide information about culture, history and wildlife. Those looking to spend time outdoors can enjoy both a longer route for different activities and insights into the surrounding area.
Museums and Maritime History
The Duus Museum is Reykjanesbær’s art and cultural centre. It houses exhibition spaces for the Reykjanesbær Art Museum and the Reykjanesbær Local History Museum, as well as the Geopark visitor centre. Art, local history and geology come together in one place.
The Reykjanes Maritime Center displays more than 100 boat models built by local skipper Grímur Karlsson. In Njarðvík, Vikingaheimar houses the Viking ship Íslendingur, an exact replica of the famous Gokstad ship. The two collections have different focuses: one features boat models from local seafaring, while the other presents a replica Viking ship.
At the Icelandic Museum of Rock ’n’ Roll in Keflavík, a timeline traces Icelandic music history from 1920 to the present day. Hljómahöll adds to the cultural offering as a cultural and concert venue with facilities for meetings and conferences.
Townscape and Architectural Heritage
Many old houses, renovated in their original style, stand in the oldest part of Keflavík, near the Duus Museum. The area can be explored on foot. Simple architecture, the houses and the peaceful surroundings shape the walk.
Stekkjarkot in Njarðvík is a reconstruction of an old turf house. It represents a type of home typical of many fishermen’s houses, which were inhabited by fishermen and their families in the 19th century. The original building was inhabited for a total of 30 years between 1857 and 1924. The building offers a glimpse both of the construction style and of some aspects of life in a former fishing household.
Two churches also reflect different points in history. Ytri-Njarðvíkurkirkja was consecrated on 19 April 1979 and designed by architects Ormar Þór Guðmundsson and Örnólfur Hall. Njarðvíkurkirkja in Innri-Njarðvík was consecrated in 1886; its history dates back at least to the 14th century.
Town Festival and Family Outing
Ljósanótt, the Night of Lights, is Reykjanesbær’s town festival and takes place every year on the first weekend of September. As the specific festival dates are important for travel planning, it is a good idea to check them in advance.
Waterworld is an indoor water park for the whole family. It features heated water and various play equipment for young children. Alongside museums, history and coastal paths, it offers another outing option with an explicitly family-friendly focus.
Plan Your Journey and Search for Accommodation
Allow about 40 minutes to travel from Reykjanesbær to central Reykjavík via the four-lane Reykjanesbraut road. The actual journey time depends on traffic and conditions. Bus route 55 runs regularly to and from the capital area and stops in Fjörður in Hafnarfjörður; check the current schedule before travelling.
When looking for accommodation in Reykjanesbær, you could first consider whether museums and local history, coastal paths or a visit centred around Ljósanótt will be the focus of your stay. This way, you can start planning around the kind of experience you want before searching for suitable hotels.
