In Zalakaros, the history of the baths, Termáltó and Ökopart, and local wine traditions come together. These different highlights can help you plan your trip: Would you like to focus mainly on the bathing facilities, explore nature, or learn more about local culture? Your interests may determine your choice of accommodation in Zalakaros—without every experience having to revolve around the same theme.

Baths and city history

The history of the baths began in 1962, when an exploratory drilling operation discovered water at a temperature of 96 °C. The baths opened on 5 September 1965. These two dates give the bathing facilities a specific historical context and distinguish the discovery of the hot water from the later opening. Zalakarosi Fürdő is located in the city center. You can reach it by car, bus or bicycle. As transport connections may change temporarily, it is advisable to check the current options before setting out.

Termáltó and Ökopart: an addition to the bathing facilities

Termáltó and Ökopart was developed as an additional attraction alongside Zalakaros’s spa and bathing facilities. On the southern shore, a nature trail runs through the surrounding forest. Information boards explain the locally protected plants, combining exercise with insights into the plant life. Conditions on the trail may change and should be taken into account when planning.

Termáltó and Ökopart also has a playground, a maze and an outdoor fitness park. These are specific places to visit for anyone who would like to include activities beyond the bathing facilities in their time in Zalakaros. The facilities mentioned serve different purposes: the maze invites visitors to explore, the fitness park is designed for outdoor exercise, and the playground is a dedicated area at Termáltó and Ökopart. Check current conditions if a particular facility is important to your plans.

Nature in and around Zalakaros

There are walking and cycling trails in the area around Zalakaros. As routes and their availability may change, it is a good idea to check the latest route information before heading out. Kis-Balaton lies on the outskirts of Zalakaros, and its diverse bird and plant life attracts visitors. It offers a different connection with nature from the trail at Termáltó and Ökopart: here, the focus is on the bird and plant life of Kis-Balaton, while there, information boards guide visitors through the surrounding forest.

Wine tradition and local culture

Tónai is a local wine variety from Zalakaros, documented since the Middle Ages and one that survived the phylloxera crisis. It is currently available only as a young wine at some local wine cellars. Recent research classifies Tónai as the “Járdovány” variety. If you would like to try this wine, ask about its current availability in advance: the local selection and the form in which it is offered are limited.

The traditional costume tradition also extends beyond Zalakaros. The “Gyöngyös fejdísz” is a distinctive piece of traditional costume in Zalakaros and the wider surrounding area. Originally, it was made from a “Necc” cut into pieces, which was fashioned from a neckband. Its name and traditional method of construction offer a specific insight into a regional cultural feature.

Summer festival, church and other activities

Every summer, Zalakaros hosts the Kannavirág Festival, with a market and a typical festive atmosphere. Check the specific dates before your trip so that your plans coincide with the event. Another firm historical reference point is the Church of Divine Mercy, which was consecrated on 23 April 2006.

For active pursuits, Zalakaros has a riding school, as well as football, tennis and bowling facilities. The riding school is a specific reason to check its current operating status before your trip; the availability of individual sports facilities can also change. Together with the trails in the surrounding area and the nature trail at Termáltó and Ökopart, these offer different ways to spend your time locally. When looking for accommodation, you can choose based on whether baths, regional culture or outdoor activities are the main focus of your stay.
