The Roman Catholic church in Gelse was built between 1774 and 1786 in the Late Baroque style. A monument to the First World War stands at one corner; a monument to the heroes who fell in the Second World War is in the garden. At one site, a church building with a clearly dated construction period stands alongside memorials to two different wartime periods. There is also a Jewish cemetery on the outskirts of Gelse.

Church architecture and cellars offer different discoveries

Well-maintained cellars with hipped roofs and reed thatching can be seen on Szoros-hegy. This draws attention to architectural details different from those of the Late Baroque church: here, the roof shape and covering material define the impression. If you plan to visit the cellars, check their current accessibility in advance.

Hiking trails with different route descriptions

A blue-marked hiking route passes through Zalakomár, Zalakaros, Galambok, Zalaújlak, Zalamerenye, Nagybakónak, Gelse, Újudvar, Nagykanizsa and Homokkomárom. A red-marked route passes through Újudvar, Gelse, Kerecseny, Orosztony, Nagykanizsa and Liszó. Both routes include Gelse as part of a longer journey through several places. Check the current trail conditions before setting out.

For a walk with a stated total distance, the Gelse–Csibiti tó–Gelse hike is described as 18.5 kilometres long. Gelse's vineyard hill offers something different: around seven kilometres of paved paths are available to hikers and cyclists. These two figures help you compare the type of outing you have planned: a circular hike with a stated total distance or paved paths that can also be used for cycling. The stated length of the paths on the vineyard hill is approximate.

The thermal bath and its current status

Gelse Termálvölgy is a local swimming destination. Its facilities include seven pools, among them thermal-water sports, family and adventure pools, a children's paddling pool, and wellness facilities. The thermal bath is currently closed for technical reasons. If you plan to visit during your stay, check its current status beforehand; this description of its facilities does not indicate whether it is operating today.

Gelse within the wider destination of Zala

The wider destination of Zala offers a regional perspective on winegrowing through Zalai Borvidék: it developed on the slopes and plateaus of the Zalai-dombság and on the northwestern slopes of the Keszthelyi-hegység. The wine region comprises two wine districts and 38 settlements.

Kis-Balaton, also within the wider destination of Zala, offers a different perspective on the landscape. It is Zala's largest body of water, is strictly protected and covers 14,745 hectares. It is also the setting for István Fekete's classic novels Tüskevár and Téli berek. You can complement Gelse's architectural and hiking attractions with a broader look at Zala's landscape and culture.
