Kisrécse combines an international arts programme with locally protected architectural heritage. It also offers art courses and creative camps at the Kendlimajor Művészeti Szabadiskola, as well as a chapel and a monument on Dózsa György út. Community-based artistic work, activities for different age groups and local architectural heritage thus stand alongside one another as distinct cultural highlights.

Art and Architectural Heritage in Kisrécse

Every summer, artists from several countries work together at the Ludvig Nemzetközi Művésztelep, which has between 30 and 42 participants. Adults can take art courses, including painting and enamelling, at the Kendlimajor Művészeti Szabadiskola from April to October. Creative camps for children are held in the second half of July. The schedules offer different planning options: the adult programme runs over several months, while the children’s camps are concentrated in the second half of July. Check the specific dates before travelling if a course or camp is to determine your travel dates.

The chapel on Dózsa György út and the Millenniumi emlékmű on the same street are part of Kisrécse’s locally protected architectural heritage. They highlight two distinct forms of local architecture: a chapel and a monument. Together with the artists’ colony and courses, they give the area a cultural profile that places artistic work alongside architectural commemoration.

More to Discover in Zala

Zala offers a range of themes, from landscapes to wine-growing. Kis-Balaton is Zala’s largest body of water, is strictly protected and covers 14,745 hectares; it is also the setting for István Fekete’s classic novels Tüskevár and Téli berek. The Zalai Borvidék wine region developed in Zala on the slopes and uplands of the Zalai-dombság and on the north-western slopes of the Keszthelyi-hegység. It comprises two wine-growing districts and 38 settlements. Landscapes, literary connections and wine-growing offer regional highlights that differ from Kisrécse’s art and architectural heritage.

Technology and architecture can also be explored as distinct themes in Zala. At the Kotsy-vízimalom in Zalaszántó, visitors can see a working 390 cm overshot waterwheel mechanism. The Festetics kastély in Keszthely is Hungary’s fourth-largest castle and has 101 rooms. The watermill draws attention to a specific mechanism, while the castle is notable for its 101 rooms.

A seasonal option in Zala is the Kápolnapuszta Bivalyrezervátum: the Water Buffalo Festival is held there every year in May or June, and the exact date may vary. A 1.5-kilometre walking trail with rest areas and viewpoints passes through the reserve. During opening hours, visitors may pet the tame animals every day. Check the festival date and opening hours before travelling.
