Church art, a preserved log house and nature observation give Csesztreg three distinct focal points for planning a trip. The town lies in the western part of Zala County, by the Kerka stream where ĆrsĂ©g, Göcsej and HetĂ©s meet. This takes you from the regionâs natural setting to its building and domestic culture, and then to the motifs in the parish church.
Church, Log House and Rural Domestic Culture
Csesztregâs parish church may have been built in the second half of the 13th century; the construction date is an estimate. It was first mentioned in writing in 1323, when it was referred to as the Church of Saint MĂłr. Its dedication remains to Saint Mauritius. The ceiling is decorated with three larger compositions, including âThe Triumph of the Church,â the four great prophets in the spandrels, and an angel with outstretched wings proclaiming Godâs glory. Attila PintĂ©r restored the frescoes in 1993â1994. Those interested in church art will find a clearly described iconographic programme here, alongside the historical context.
The Csesztregi pĂĄsztorhĂĄz introduces a different building style: this preserved old log house has traditional log walls with interlocking ends and a thatched roof made of zsĂșp. The house and its furnishings reflect the state of traditional Göcsej architecture and domestic culture from the mid-19th century to its final third. Its construction and furnishings bring together two aspects of regional domestic culture: the houseâs structure and its interior.
The Hagyomånyok Håza in Csesztreg presents the folk culture of Hetés, Göcsej, Muraköz and Mura-vidék in a farmhouse furnished with original items. The museum of rural life in the first half of the 20th century is furnished with original furniture and objects; it also has a permanent exhibition of old photographs. Compared with the påsztorhåz, its focus is on the first half of the 20th century rather than on Göcsej architecture and domestic culture rooted in the 19th century. Plan to register in advance for a visit and check the current visiting arrangements beforehand.
Nature Observation in Csesztreg
The KakukkvirĂĄg nature trail in SzabadidĆpark focuses on the living things in and around the lake. Its theme suits a stay that includes nature observation alongside architectural and cultural history. You can observe birdsâ behaviour at the playgroundâs birdwatching station. This gives you a choice between two distinct nature themes in town: the life in and around the lake, and dedicated birdwatching.
A Regional Perspective: Zala
The wider travel destination of Zala also offers wine country and excursion destinations as part of its regional character. The Zalai Borvidék wine region developed on the slopes and plateaus of the Zalai-dombsåg and on the northwestern slopes of the Keszthelyi-hegység. It comprises two wine-growing districts and 38 settlements. Another Zala highlight is the water buffalo festival at the Kåpolnapuszta Bivalyrezervåtum: it takes place every year in May or June, though the exact dates may vary. Visitors to the reserve may pet the tame animals every day during opening hours. A 1.5-kilometre walking trail with rest areas and viewpoints runs through the reserve. Check the event dates for the relevant year before planning your stay around the festival.
