Lovászi can be explored through specific themes: the Vasfüggöny Múzeum focuses on the Cold War, the building history of the Kútfeji-kápolna tells the story of the new oil workers’ settlement, and the Kankalin Tanösvény leads around the town. In this way, local history and nature-related themes come together in different formats.
Museum and the Cold War
The Vasfüggöny Múzeum in Lovászi covers the Cold War era. Exhibits include gas masks from the period and other objects, as well as archival images relating to Lovászi’s past. A siren stands beside the building; it used to be on the roof of the bunker. The objects, images and siren offer different ways to engage with the town’s history, while the siren also recalls its former location.
The Vasfüggöny Múzeum and the Légópince include a renovated, interactive command room and a first-aid room, which visitors can see during a visit. A guided tour of the museum and Légópince is available by prior appointment. Check current availability and arrangements before travelling so you can plan your visit accordingly.
The Kútfeji-kápolna and its building history
The Kútfeji-kápolna in Lovászi was built in 1949 in connection with the new oil workers’ settlement. In 1998–1999, it was extended with a choir room and a bell tower. Its building history reveals two distinct phases: its construction in connection with the settlement and its later extension. The chapel thus adds another specific link to the development of the oil workers’ settlement to the town’s history.
Nature trail and Kerkaland Tour
The Kankalin Tanösvény runs around Lovászi and offers insight into the town’s natural surroundings, folk traditions, vernacular architecture, flora and fauna, and the history of the oil industry. Its themes range from nature and wildlife to local cultural and industrial history. This distinguishes the nature trail’s focus from the museum’s concentrated focus on the Cold War.
The Kerkaland Tour also passes through Lovászi, offering cyclists another route perspective. The two options have different focuses: the Kankalin Tanösvény centres on nature, traditions and local history, while the Kerkaland Tour offers another way to include Lovászi in a tour. You can choose between them according to the themes that interest you most.
Location in the Kerka Valley
Lovászi lies in the southwest of Zala County, in the valley of the River Kerka, on its right bank and along the road between Lenti and Letenye. This description combines its location by the river and in the valley with its position on the road between the two named towns. It places Lovászi both in the Kerka landscape and in the southwest of the county.
Zala as a wider context
The wider destination of Zala offers further regional themes. The Zalai Borvidék developed on the slopes and plateaus of the Zalai-dombság and on the northwestern slopes of the Keszthelyi-hegység. It comprises two wine-growing districts and 38 settlements. These details offer a glimpse of the extent and structure of Zala’s wine-growing region.
The Kis-Balaton is also part of the wider destination of Zala. It is Zala’s largest body of water, is strictly protected and covers 14,745 hectares. It is also the setting for István Fekete’s classic novels Tüskevár and Téli berek. Alongside the themes rooted in Lovászi, regional landscape and literary connections can also help you find your way around the destination of Zala.
