Gyulakeszi combines mill history with horse-riding opportunities for visitors of different experience levels. At the site of Csigó Mill, the history of a mill and later industrial operation takes centre stage, along with an antique collection open to visitors; Gyula Vezér Lovasbirodalma offers horse-riding opportunities. Other attractions in the wider Balaton North destination round out your travel plans.

Mill history at the Csigó Mill site

The main building of Csigó Mill was built in 1867 by Csigó István for his son, Csigó Pál. The site was home first to a watermill from the 13th century, and later to a steam mill. After nationalisation, the complex was converted into a feed-mixing plant; operations ended in 2002. The date of the main building and the start of milling at the site are therefore far apart: the history of the location goes back much further than the 1867 building.

Another aspect of Csigó Mill is its antique collection, which is open to visitors. The objects include furniture, paintings, carpets and porcelain. This means there is more to the site than mill history: the collection draws attention to a variety of works of art and furnishings. Check current visiting arrangements before your trip.

Horse riding for different experience levels

Gyula Vezér Lovasbirodalma offers lunge lessons for beginners. More riding opportunities are available for intermediate and experienced riders, including rides in the countryside. When comparing the options, you can use your own riding experience as a guide: the offer for beginners is explicitly identified, while rides in the countryside are also available to intermediate and experienced riders. Confirm current availability before your trip.

In the wider Balaton North destination, Tapolcai-tavasbarlang offers boat trips and a guided exhibition entitled “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”). This cave attraction adds a different focus to Gyulakeszi’s mill history and collection: here, boat trips and a guided exhibition take centre stage.

Hegyestű is another distinctive landscape attraction in the wider Balaton North destination. The 337-metre-high mountain between Zánka and Monoszló exposes the interior of a basalt volcano that was active around 8 million years ago. From the lookout point on the western edge of the quarry site, visitors can identify the surrounding hills with the help of a panorama board. Hegyestű also has a rock garden featuring characteristic rock types of Transdanubia, the western half of Hungary. Geology, landscape orientation and rock types give this destination a different character from the local cultural and horse-riding attractions.

Herend offers a cultural and craft-focused attraction in the wider Balaton North destination. The Herend Porcelain Museum presents a permanent exhibition and changing exhibitions on the history of the manufactory. The visitor centre explains porcelain production, techniques and applied-art traditions. In workshops at the Minimanufactory, visitors can handle porcelain paste and a brush for painting. The exhibitions on the history of the manufactory and the workshops thus offer distinct ways to explore it.
