Three themes can help you plan a trip to Nagytevel: the historic architectural ensemble, opportunities for hiking and cycling, and the bathing area at the reservoir. Each gives your stay a different focus. The cycling connection still needs to be signposted, while the bathing area rules come from a 2019 regulation.

The historic ensemble

The historic architectural ensemble in Nagytevel was built in the late 18th century by the Cistercian Order of Zirc. It comprises the Roman Catholic church, the Calvary and the Holy Sepulchre, as well as a manor house and a two-storey manorial barn. Sacred buildings and manorial architecture together form the historic focal point. The description mentions the Tájmúzeum exhibition in the manor house; the abbey’s central offices were previously located there. The former administrative function and the exhibition connect two different uses of the same building with the history of the ensemble. For a culture-focused stay, it is worth viewing the complex as a whole rather than focusing solely on the church.

Hiking and cycling

A hiking option on a marked trail is listed in Nagytevel. Tapolcafő can be reached from Nagytevel via an unpaved road. A cycling route that still needs to be signposted is planned to branch off in Tapolcafő: northwest via Pápa to Somlóvásárhely and south to cycling routes. The hiking option is specific to Nagytevel; the planned cycling route also names destinations beyond the village. If you plan to use it for a ride, check the current route and signage in advance. The unpaved road to Tapolcafő is also a practical consideration for your plans.

Bathing area at the Nagytevel Reservoir

The 2019 regulation provided that visitors could enter the bathing area after purchasing an admission ticket; people permanently residing in Nagytevel were exempt. Swimming was permitted only in the designated water area and prohibited elsewhere in the reservoir. Bathers could leave their bicycles free of charge in a designated area. If you are considering visiting the bathing area as part of your travel plans, check the current conditions before you go.

More destinations in the wider Balaton - North travel region

The wider Balaton - North travel region offers more themes to explore. Boat trips are available at Tapolcai-tavasbarlang, which also features the guided exhibition “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”). The cave is part of an underground cave system beneath the town that has been explored to a length of 14.6 kilometres so far. Hegyestű turns the focus to geology: the 337-metre-high mountain lies between Zánka and Monoszló and exposes the interior of a basalt volcano that was active about eight million years ago. At the western edge of the quarry site, visitors can use a panorama board to identify the surrounding hills; a rock garden displays characteristic rock types of Transdanubia.
