Castle rooms, historic textile technology and a large park give Pápa three distinct visitor highlights. Esterházy Castle focuses on grand Baroque interiors; the Kékfestő Museum displays actual machinery, and Várkert lies behind the castle. This lets you consider cultural history and time outdoors as separate elements of your stay.

Castle, museum and park in Pápa

Guided tours of the grand Baroque interiors of Esterházy Castle start every hour. The first begins one hour after opening, and the last one hour before closing. There is no minimum number of participants: even one person can join, and groups can have up to 30 people. Check the current schedule before your visit to make sure the planned castle tour fits into your day.

Visitors with reduced mobility can reach the castle’s exhibition rooms by elevator.

In the cellar of the Kékfestő Museum, you can see a Hoffmeister steam engine made in 1912 and a horse-powered calendering machine. The different power sources—steam and horsepower—make the technical contrast easy to see.

A guided tour of the more than 250-year-old, three-storey drying house brings the former workshop to life. Check the museum’s current visitor information in advance.

Várkert lies behind the castle and covers 100 hectares. This English-style park has a playground and walking paths. It therefore adds a distinct outdoor highlight to the indoor visits. If you are making specific plans, ask locally about the current status of the facilities.

More highlights in the wider Lake Balaton North destination

The wider Lake Balaton North destination offers further, distinct experiences. Boat trips are available in the Tapolcai-tavasbarlang, which also has a guided exhibition, “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”). The cave is part of an underground cave system beneath the town that has so far been explored over a length of 14.6 kilometres. The visitor experience and the geological scale go hand in hand here.

Hegyestű is a 337-metre-high mountain between Zánka and Monoszló. The inside of a basalt volcano that was active around eight million years ago is exposed there. At the viewpoint on the western edge of the quarry site, a panorama board helps you identify the surrounding hills. Hegyestű also has a rock garden featuring characteristic rock types from Transdanubia, the western half of Hungary. This combines the geological feature with a guide to the landscape.

Cultural attractions also offer varied experiences: the Pannon Csillagda in Bakonybél has an interactive exhibition about space exploration and astronomy. The Herend Porcelain Museum presents a permanent exhibition and changing exhibitions on the history of the manufactory. In workshops at the Minimanufaktúra, participants can handle porcelain clay and a brush for painting. The regional selection thus ranges from an interactive exhibition to hands-on work with materials.
