Kercseliget can be explored through its architectural and art history, as well as its hiking connections. The Roman Catholic Church of Szent István király templom and the former Maár Castle represent different traces of the local past. A hiking trail marked out by the Kercseliget Fejlődéséért Association is also connected with the village, while Hármashatár lies nearby. There, the counties of Baranya, Somogy and Tolna meet at the marked P hiking trail. This distinction is useful when planning: the church and castle history are in Kercseliget, while the meeting point is a destination in the surrounding area.

The church: architectural history and art

The Roman Catholic Church of Szent István király templom in Kercseliget was rebuilt between 1781 and 1784 in the Baroque-Classical style. Count Ferenc Esterháry supported the construction in his role as the community’s church patron. Later works mark distinct points in time: in 1910, the church underwent extensive renovation and was enlarged. The interior painting was completed in 1928 and restored in the early 1980s. The construction, enlargement and restoration can thus be read as separate phases rather than being conflated into a single building period.

The furnishings also offer specific points of interest. The painting above the main altar depicts the birth of Mary; Mór Than created it in 1871. That date refers to the creation of the painting and comes well after the church was rebuilt. Statues of Saint Stephen and Saint Ladislaus stand above the two side entrances. The altarpiece, interior painting and statues offer different points of reference for the furnishings and interior design.

The former Maár Castle

Another local architectural landmark is the building of the former Maár Castle. It dates from 1860 and is Classical in style. Maár Castle in Kercseliget is protected as a historic monument and is listed in Somogy County’s register of monuments. Compared with the church, the date 1860 places the building in the 19th century; the church was rebuilt between 1781 and 1784. The church has several dated construction and furnishing phases, while the castle marks a second architectural point, dated to 1860.

Hiking connections in the village and surrounding area

In Kercseliget, the Kercseliget Fejlődéséért Association has marked out a hiking trail. Hármashatár nearby offers further points of reference: the meeting point lies on the marked P hiking trail, where the counties of Baranya, Somogy and Tolna meet. A memorial column commemorates this point; there is also a forest rest area and a small wooden lookout tower. Kercseliget, Jágónak and Baranyajenő erected the column in September 1998. The combination of the county boundary and memorial column makes Hármashatár both a geographical reference point and a place of remembrance.

Nature highlights in the wider Lake Balaton – South travel destination

The wider Lake Balaton – South travel destination offers further nature-related attractions. In 2009, the Zselici Tájvédelmi Körzet (Zselic Landscape Protection Area) was awarded the title of International Dark Sky Park because of its low light pollution; the Zselici Csillagpark (Zselic Star Park) was established in the heart of the protected area. Somogy County includes, among other places, Kis-Balaton, the Zselici Tájvédelmi Körzet, the Barcsi Ősborókás and Babócsai Basakert. Baláta lies between Kaszó and Szenta and is considered one of Somogy’s most prized natural assets. Kercseliget’s local architectural and art history is thus set within a broader regional context that includes a star park and natural sites.
