Bőszénfa combines local history with parkland, a wildlife park and a marked hiking route. The local attractions differ in scope: the Szent Notburga Church stands in the town centre, Nemzedékek Park brings together several features within a single park, and the Négy-fa Trail connects several places. When planning, you can therefore choose how to balance local history, the park and excursions into the landscape.

Church and Local History

The Roman Catholic Szent Notburga Church stands in the centre of Bőszénfa and is considered an important testament to the town’s history and character. It was consecrated on 13 September 1902, replacing the first church, built in 1777. The dates therefore refer to two different events: 1777 to the construction of the first church, and 1902 to the consecration of the church that replaced it. For anyone interested in the town’s history, the centrally located church offers a tangible point of reference.

Nemzedékek Park: Several Features in One Park

The features described at Nemzedékek Park include an ornamental pond, barbecue fire pits and benches. The park also includes a modern playground for children. A 1,200-metre paved footpath connects the park’s main areas. This makes it possible to take in the different features together: the path links areas within the park, while the pond, barbecue pits, benches and playground each offer a different focus. As the facilities may change, it is advisable to check their current condition before visiting.

Wildlife Park, Hiking Trail and Landscape

The wildlife park at Bőszénfai Szarvasfarm can be visited independently throughout the year during opening hours. Plan your visit around these hours and check them in advance. A different kind of outing is the green-marked “Négy fa” hiking trail: it connects Bőszénfa, Cserénfa, Simonfa, Gálosfa and Kaposgyarmat and passes through the central part of the Zselic. While the paved footpath connects the main areas of Nemzedékek Park, this marked route passes through several places and therefore serves a different purpose.

The landscape also offers a variety of points of interest. The hilltops near Bőszénfa offer particularly beautiful, picturesque views across the landscape. The area is rich in wildlife; animals found there include wild boar, red deer, roe deer and brown hares. A significant part of Bőszénfa’s surrounding area lies within the Zselic Landscape Protection Area. Views, wildlife and the protected-area setting are distinct aspects to consider alongside the local attractions and hiking route.

Regional Context and Cuisine

In the wider South Balaton destination, the Zselici Tájvédelmi Körzet was awarded the title of International Dark Sky Park in 2009 because of its low levels of light pollution. Zselici Csillagpark was established in the heart of this protected area. This information describes the regional context of South Balaton.

In Bőszénfa, Zselicvad Étterem serves dishes made with meat from locally raised wild and domestic animals. Side dishes mainly feature mushrooms gathered in the surrounding area, as well as herbs and vegetables. As the menu may change, it is worth checking the current offerings before visiting.
