Kaposkeresztúr lies in a valley enclosed by the Zselic Hills and surrounded by forests. The area also includes a Natura 2000 bird protection area and historic places of remembrance in the church garden. The landscape and local history therefore offer two clear starting points for planning a trip. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can consider whether the natural surroundings or local places of remembrance should carry more weight in your choice of accommodation.

Valley, Forest and Protected Areas

The Zselic Natura 2000 bird protection area covers 521.43 hectares of Kaposkeresztúr’s municipal area, equivalent to 26.33 percent of the municipality. This means that more than a quarter of the municipality lies within the bird protection area. Kaposkeresztúr is also connected with the Észak-zselici-erdőségek protected area. The village can therefore be described both in terms of its quantified share of the bird protection area and its connection to another named protected area. Together with the valley and surrounding forests, this gives a concrete picture of the natural environment to help guide your choice of destination.

The Zselic in the Wider Lake Balaton – South Destination

The Zselic’s connection to the wider Lake Balaton – South destination provides further regional context. The Zselic protected area is a Natura 2000 site under the Birds Directive and protects 17 species covered by nature conservation directives. In 2009, the Zselici Tájvédelmi Körzet received the title of International Dark Sky Park because of its low light pollution; the Zselici Csillagpark was established in the heart of the protected area. Nature conservation and low light pollution offer two distinct regional perspectives. The 17 species refer to the Zselic protected area at the regional scale, whereas 521.43 hectares refers to the area of the bird protection area within Kaposkeresztúr’s municipal boundaries. Baláta, located between Kaszó and Szenta and considered a particularly valued natural asset, is also part of Somogy’s regional natural landscape.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

Keep the different road references in mind when finding your way. Main Road 66 touches the southern edge of Kaposkeresztúr’s administrative area. The centre is reached by a side road that branches south from Main Road 61 at Baté. Two different reference points are therefore relevant: the location of Main Road 66 at the administrative boundary and the access route to the centre from Main Road 61.

Church and Local Places of Remembrance

The Church of Magyarok Nagyasszonya is located in Kaposkeresztúr. A memorial to those who fell in the First World War stands in the church garden in front of the church. Also in the church garden, on Szabadság tér, is the Bárdos Cross, a stone cross with a corpus and a statue of the Virgin Mary dating from 1888. Thus, the same garden brings together a memorial to those who fell in the First World War and a cross dated 1888. These two places of remembrance offer different historical points of reference within the local cultural theme.

A Hike after New Year
