Csatka offers two distinct perspectives on local history: the early written record of the Pauline monastery church and the architectural form of the Sarlós Boldogasszony Church. Szentkút, about one kilometre to the southeast, is a separate pilgrimage and landscape destination.
Churches and History in Csatka
The Pauline monastery church in Csatka is first mentioned in writing in 1357; it was destroyed in the years following the Battle of Mohács. The architecture of the Sarlós Boldogasszony Church offers another way to understand its history: it faces east and has a single-nave body with rows of chapels on both sides, each with a pitched roof. The chancel has a straight end. Written records and architectural form thus offer different clues to the history of the area.
Szentkút: Pilgrimage Site and Woodland Landscape
The eastern route from Csatka to Szentkút follows either the route marked with a red stripe or the Mária út. If you plan to take either option, check current trail conditions in advance. The approximate distance—one kilometre southeast of Csatka—indicates where Szentkút is located; it does not tell you how long the journey takes.
The Irgalmasság Anyja Chapel is located at Szentkút. The pilgrimage site lies in a densely wooded valley basin and is a popular destination for pilgrims. The chapel was originally single-naved and was expanded with two side aisles with shed roofs. Its structure therefore differs from the layout described for the Sarlós Boldogasszony Church in Csatka. The chapel near Szentkút has a different layout from the Sarlós Boldogasszony Church in Csatka, with its expanded structure; the wooded valley basin also forms a landscape highlight in the immediate surroundings of the pilgrimage site.
The Wider Komorn-Gran Region
Beyond Csatka, the wider destination of Komorn-Gran offers a broader landscape and cultural context. The Gerecsei Tájvédelmi Körzet is a nationally significant, independently designated landscape protection area in Komárom-Esztergom, covering 8,676 hectares. Triassic limestone predominates in the Gerecse; Jurassic limestone is also found there and is particularly rich in fossils.
Another cultural highlight is the Majki Kamalduli Remeteség, a Baroque monument complex comprising seventeen hermit houses, a church tower and a monastery. An exhibition covers the general and Hungarian history of the Camaldolese order. The complex is open Tuesday to Sunday: from 1 April to 31 October, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and from 1 November to 31 March, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Check the schedule before your visit.
At the Bábolna Nemzeti Ménesbirtok, carriage rides with two Shagya Arabian mares go to the nearby arboretum; advance booking is required. The “Fogat bemutató, ménfelvezetés” programme features four-, five- and two-horse teams that visitors can try out themselves. The guided visit begins with an exhibition on the history of the stud farm and continues in the Ménesudvar.
Archaeological finds from the excavations at Brigetio are the focus of the interactive permanent exhibition at the Brigetio Öröksége Látogatóközpont. It offers another distinct cultural theme within the wider Komorn-Gran destination.
