Ácsteszér brings together several historical connections to Táncsics Mihály, a church dating from the late 18th century, and the cross-border SacraVelo cycling pilgrimage route network. Visitors who choose to stay here can explore cultural history and cycling pilgrimage routes as distinct themes. The specific Táncsics sites do not all tell the same story: one house is identified as his birthplace, one statue commemorates him, and another sculpture focuses on the free press.

Táncsics Mihály: Birthplace and Memorials

The Táncsics Mihály Emlékház is a house built in 1790, with earthen walls and a thatched roof. It is identified as Táncsics Mihály’s birthplace. The construction date predates that of the Church of St Martin, Bishop, making it an early chronological landmark in the history of the village. The earthen walls and thatched roof are specific architectural features of the house; its designation as a birthplace adds a biographical connection.

The statue of Táncsics Mihály was erected in 1886 in Ácsteszér, his home village. It was Hungary’s first statue of Táncsics. Visitors to the statue can take a tour that provides information about its history, its patrons, the year it was erected, and its creators. The focus here is therefore not only on Táncsics Mihály himself, but also on the creation of the memorial.

A separate sculpture is called Ősnyomtató. It stands at the beginning of Táncsics Mihály Street in a well-maintained park and commemorates Táncsics Mihály as a champion of the free press. The two artworks thus highlight different aspects: the statue is devoted to Táncsics and its own history, while Ősnyomtató highlights his significance for press freedom.

The Church and Its Historical Context

The Church of St Martin, Bishop, was built in 1792–94 and dedicated to this saint. Together with the Táncsics Mihály Emlékház, built in 1790, it offers two different historical perspectives: the house is connected with Táncsics’ biography, while the church is associated with its dedication to the saint. The construction dates also offer a simple timeline: the house came first, followed by the church a few years later. This chronological comparison complements the biographical and artistic connections with a religious landmark.

Cycling Pilgrimage Routes and Orientation

Ácsteszér is part of SacraVelo, a cross-border network of cycling pilgrimage routes in the Danube region. This gives the choice of destination a cycling connection in addition to its historical attractions. When planning a specific trip, take the route conditions into account, as they may change. Ácsteszér also served as the start and finish point for the IVV Táncsics Tour for 25 years.

The Ácsteszér Guide interactive audio guide app provides orientation to natural and cultural attractions in Ácsteszér and the surrounding area. Availability and features may change, so check before travelling whether the app is currently available and what features it offers.

Separate Context: Komorn-Gran

The wider Komorn-Gran destination offers other distinct cultural and landscape themes. The Gerecsei Tájvédelmi Körzet is a nationally significant, individually designated landscape protection area in Komárom-Esztergom, covering 8,676 hectares. In the Gerecse Mountains, alongside the predominant Triassic limestone, there is also Jurassic limestone, which is particularly rich in fossils. This geological feature offers a different perspective on the region from the Táncsics sites and memorials in Ácsteszér.

The Monostori Erőd is also part of the wider Komorn-Gran destination: it is a military monument within the fortification system of Komárom. Exhibitions and staged scenes illustrate the periods of the monarchy, the world wars, and the Soviet occupation. These themes stand on their own and should be distinguished from the attractions of Ácsteszér. When choosing a holiday rental, it may therefore help to first decide on the focus of your stay: local Táncsics history and SacraVelo, or other cultural and landscape themes in the Komorn-Gran destination.
